i really struggled with the clumsy human trafficking subplot, its just felt half baked and kind of hurtful to write such a serious and relevant topic in such a lazy way

Making the movie's background plot about the mass assault and enslavement of child "brides" and them not having pretty much any speaking lines/baring on the plot was also a... Choice in 2026.

Everything they altered in the "adaptation" missed the point more and more. Imagine getting such a deep, emotional story to adapt, and then stripping it of ALL the themes about oppression and women's grief being silenced, and instead turning it into sex trafficking movie that actually just centers the male sex traffickers instead of the main characters' stories. Such a loss.

Seems like they went in thinking ‘no 1 priority is showing how Supergirl is different than superman, answer, she swears drinks and kills’

I knew the movie was doomed to fail when the director practically bragged about never reading the comic the movie title is based on.

Your comment about the wives from Fury Road was exactly what pissed me off about this film so much. I was absolutely floored that the screenplay used sexual violence as nothing more than set dressing to raise the stakes for our leads. All this handwringing about saving Ruthye's inocence while other girls her age are getting carted away to be "brides" with nothing more than a few quips and scenes where they are brutalized for shock. Where was Supergirls concern for the girls who shot a harpoon through her attackers chest? Just a nod of aproval only  immediately to yap to Ruthye why what those girls did was wrong and shed be ruined for it? Im glad someone had the common sense to cut the scene where Krem threatens to assault Rutheye after it tested poorly. Jfc! Like did Joss Whedon ghost write this shit?

I think part of the problem with Empowered Women characters is that our culture is obsessed with violence. The default mode of thinking seems to be that to be “empowered” is to able to apply violence and not suffer any consequences, because we view violence and the capacity to inflict it on people to get what we want as the ultimate form of wish fulfillment.

I still can’t get over how the movie (accurately) found it not appropriate to kill the dog but did find it appropriate (wrongly) to kill the entire black family including the child for some reason.

the central problem with Supergirl is that its script fundamentally misunderstands the point of the story that it takes most of its inspiration from; Woman of Tomorrow is about two girls learning the best and worst of each other within this big, grand quest for revenge; there's all of these side quests where Ruthye is so impacted by the kindness Kara gives while Kara becomes more and more hardened by each tragedy they come across. it's an epic, an ambitious kind of space western that's really driven by the interactions of its main characters, the lessons they learn, and the hope they lean on in the face of unbearable loneliness.

the film uses that story as its backdrop but it neglects that tension in the way that there's little time devoted to Ruthye as a foil to Kara, to their parallel tragedies, so the script either needed more time or a significant rehaul to figure out how to separate what it can adapt from what it wants to adapt but can't really realize.

also Craig Gillespie was a bad director choice because nothing in his body of work lends itself to making a colorful, heavily detailed space opera, and I mourn the Lana Wachowski/Chloe Zhao Supergirl that wasn't.

milly alcock is 2 for 2 in bringing a standout performance to a lack luster adaptation of a character. i do have to imagine she was envisioned as to foil for superman, but it's somewhat sad that they couldn't imagine a punk character who isn't capable of incredibly lengths of kindness while still retaining her identity separate from her cousin. the movie is very weak compared to the comic which has stronger messaging and a confidence sense of self, but even without it, the movie doesn't have actual legs to stand on in terms of framing seeking revenge as something that inherently makes you worse. it's so weird how fumbled it was.

My enjoyment of the movie ended at the scene where Ruthye was about to kill Kreem-sicle before he could kill a black girl he was gonna traffick but Kara grabs Ruthye, allowing him to continue to chase after the girl. When he finally catches up to her, he kills her and her parents. Ruthye and Kara have an argument right next to their dead bodies but not about their deaths but about Ruthye almost killing Kreem de la Creme.

I really wish they kept the montage of Kara and Ruthye going around helping people and getting information on Krem. It’s only a few scenes but it does a lot to show the compassionate side of Kara. The “Thank you, neighbor” scene is such a great moment and I think having those scenes would’ve added a lot to the film

I hated the Madonna/Whore vibes I was getting between Ruthie getting revenge vs the child brides getting revenge.
It's not ok for Ruthie to get revenge/justice by killing the man who murdered her family, because it would corrupt her and she would no longer be "pure".
But it's ok for the child brides (who are around the same age as Ruthie) to get revenge on their captures because firstly it's "helping" Supergirl and also it implied these girls have already been sexually abused. So they are no longer pure and getting revenge won't corrupt them.
Kara only showed concern for Ruthie's emotional/mental health, not the other girls.
We don't hear or see them at the end of the movie. Or what happened to any of them 😢

Glad some other comments pointed it out: Supergirl saving the villain, thereby allowing him to kill an entire family (including a sex slave), ruined it for me.

Rubbing salt in the wound: Supergirl doesn’t seem to even regret this? She reiterates that revenge = feeling bad and then flies into space to mourn… her still living dog.

I liked it, but my big problem was that it wants to be a movie about overcoming apathy. And I don’t think that was the right direction or fit the ending.  It should have been about overcoming anger.

I think CW's Supergirl was failed by writers who didn't have a cohesive view of what politics she should embody. As a result, she was frequently portrayed as a female version of Clark Kent rather than as her own character.

I have many problems with Supergirl as a movie, and put together, I think they make it a supremely underwhelming and disappointing viewing experience.

1. The movie is constantly contriving new excuses for why Kara can’t just kill Krem, especially towards the third act, but these excuses both make the villain seem simultaneously too stupid and too well-prepared to be that stupid. What do you mean Krem doesn’t send his forces to just kill Kara once she’s on the Green Sun planet? What do you mean he has multiple fucking Kryptonite arrows “just in case” he comes across one of the two remaining members of an alien race that has been dead for at least twenty-five years at this point??

2. Krem is just a complete nothing villain. They try to make him hateable, but they don’t treat his implied sexual violence with nearly the gravity it deserves, so it just comes across as exploitative

3. Lobo really could’ve been a better foil to Kara, as someone who acts selfishly without restraint, the kind of person Kara could be if she took out the trauma of her past on the rest of the world. But his main role in the story is just to beat up useless mooks. I’m honestly really disappointed that these two didn’t at least have some kind of serious conflict at some point in the movie, whether it be character-wise, or physical conflict

This movie isn’t all bad, and ultimately, I like how it ends, overall. I was dreading a “you can’t kill Hitler or you’ll become Hitler” moment around when Ruthye was about to kill Krem, but it ended up actually being more about not letting her past trauma and vengeance consume her, which fits with Kara’s arc relatively well. Still though, this part at the end which is pretty alright just makes me wish the rest of the preceding three quarters of the movie did more to enhance those themes

Whyyyy, if almost none of the people Kara meets in space are human, are ALL of the kidnapped women human??

When I heard the movie was based on the Woman of Tomorrow comic and when I saw the art/color direction of the trailer, I began to have doubts.

The page of Kara flying into a sun so she can scream out her rage and grief for all the corpses and destruction they find HAUNTS me
