In this video we take a road trip through a dozen historic small towns in Central Florida, exploring their main streets, downtown districts, and the stories behind how they were founded. Starting in Lake Placid—known as both the “Town of Murals” and the Caladium Capital of the World—we travel through communities across Polk, Hardee, and DeSoto counties including Frostproof, Dundee, Lake Hamilton, Lake Alfred, Eagle Lake, Mulberry, Fort Meade, Bowling Green, Wauchula, Zolfo Springs, and Arcadia. Along the way we look at railroad history, citrus and phosphate industries, unusual town name origins, and how these communities have grown and changed over time. From tiny towns of just over 1,500 people to historic county seats with beautifully preserved downtowns, this drive through small-town Florida highlights the unique character and history that can still be found along the state’s back roads.

Polk county is great! They have a great sheriff that upholds the law! Sheriff Grady Judd he’s great and has the safest community! Great man!

As a new Arcadian that is my favorite. It reminds me of the small town I grew up in back in Ct. The people here are very nice .

Thanks John... I'm really enjoying your small towns videos. I agree, Arcadia was my favorite as well. The downtown was fabulous.

One of the things I like about Florida small towns is that they seem to keep that old timely feel and look to them. It's like things are sized down a bit making it seem homey... somewhat like a lakeside cottage environment.😊

Wachula was #1 for me. Then #2 was Arcadia. I absolutely love that wall scenery in Wachula. Where the cowboys and farmers are integrated❤❤

Watch out when you drive through Zolfo Springs! The speed trap there cost me $450.

Fort Meade would get my vote, as I believe it was the town with all of the historical homes and buildings. Am I correct? All the communities seemed very nice. Thank you for taking us along! 🚙💨💨💨

Fort Meade is known for not having property taxes, they buy electric wholesale resell it to the residents retail and use that to fund city services.

There were some really nice little towns in this video. I agree that Arcadia was my very favorite. Bowling Green was my least, however, each town has some good points. I appreciate learning about some places in Florida that are underrated. Thanks for picking some places that never get seen. 😊❤

I forgot to keep track, but I probably would have liked Fort Meade the most because it's the birthplace of Andrew McCutchen. So I would have been looking for his original house and where he played ball in town. Thanks for the great video.

Pleasant color pallets in those towns - especially Ft Meade. Florida is my least traveled state as far as county count percentages. I only been in the panhandle - have yet to get east of the Suwannee River
