China's 'Little Africa': Sanyuanli Explained

People often ask me: is it actually safe for Africans to live in China? So I went to find out myself.

I started at Guangzhou Railway Station and walked toward Sanyuanli (三元里) — known as "Little Africa" — passing through a local watch and clothing market along the way. While filming inside one of the shops, a shop owner came up and told me not to livestream or take photos/video at all — turns out it's because some of the goods there are counterfeit, and shop owners are understandably cautious about being filmed. I wasn't posting to any Chinese platforms, but I respected the request and moved on.

From there, I continued into Sanyuanli, where I explored the neighborhood on foot, saw African-owned businesses operating everywhere, and sat down for a meal at an authentic African restaurant in the area. This part of Guangzhou isn't just home to a large African community — it's shared by Arab, Russian, and other foreign communities as well, all coexisting in the same few blocks.

If you've ever wondered what daily life actually looks like for Africans living in China, this is a real, honest look — not a headline, just what I saw walking the streets myself.
