I haven’t seen my father since I was 6 years old. Growing up, I never knew anyone from his side of the family. All I knew was that our roots came from a place in China called Taishan (台山).

So after all these years, I finally decided to go see it for myself.

I went there knowing nobody, with no addresses, no connections, and only one clue  my Chinese last name, 余 (Yu).

What started as a search for my father’s family turned into something I wasn’t expecting.

I met strangers who welcomed me like family, walked through villages where my ancestors may have once lived, and started to understand a part of myself I never really knew.

I didn’t find everything I was looking for. But sometimes the journey gives you something you didn’t even know you needed.
