What does the US Secret Service have to do with using EQ? More on that in a minute. When you mix a song, and you add EQ to a track, do you still feel like you're randomly twisting knobs, hoping for the best? Or maybe you jump from preset to preset in hopes that something will make your vocal track or kick drum sound right? In this video I want to help you fix that forever. But to DO that, you've go to change the way you THINK about EQ and mixing. I wanna share three specific mindset shifts that will help you go from hating EQ to using it like a boss. And stick, around until the end for a bonus tip that will make all your EQ decisions ten times easier.

I learned to embrace subtractive eq by using one hand to adjust the EQ of a track (as it's playing with the rest of the mix) and keeping my other hand on that track's fader. This way I can balance the track in the mix both by its overall volume and by the EQ change I'm making. Another great trick is to pull the fader down lower than you think it should be, mute the channel (again always with the full mix playing) then after maybe 2 seconds unmute the channel and adjust the fader (if needed). Briefly muting a track can really draw your attention to what purpose it plays in the mix.

Every studio needs an air-hockey table! LOL

This is exactly why I think it's better to have a crappy monitoring system you know really well than a great monitoring system you don't. If you spend 90% of your time listening to other people's music on AirPods, then you're better off mixing on AirPods than $10,000 speakers in a perfectly treated room. A great monitoring setup is awesome, but it's useless if you don't understand it.

The amount of enthusiasm that you bring to your videos is infectious. It's great to see this kind of presentation consistently. It's not just what you do, but the way you do it makes all the difference. THANK YOU!!!😊

Good video Joe. What I do is once the levels are set, if I find I am not hearing an instrument any more (say kick), I will then start hitting the mute button on other tracks, one at a time while listening to the kick. Once I find an offender, I will then pull up an eq and start subtracting, on that track listening for the kick come back. From experience, kick masking is either guitars, bass, keys, or reverbs. This method to find what is masking a sound works for me pretty consistently. A lot of times it’s more than one track contributing to the masking.

My best mixes have the fewest plugins. Learning to resist the urge to add plugins, in excess, has been a huge part of my growth. You're the very best!

Masking is when multiple elements are competing for the same frequencies or frequency range, or sometimes even octaves or harmonics, and one or more of them become obscured. A little bit of surgical subtractive EQ can unmask things in the mix with much less effort than boosting and compressing things to make them stand out.

One of the best schoolin's out there.

I'm really happy that I found your channel today because you explain these things in the way I am able to comprehend. When I was listening to the example of different frequency ranges I realized that the low mids sound like music from the room next to me, high mids sound like a radio on a tv show and highs sound like earphones of person sitting next to me.

That is some sound advice..point taken .

@CentaurPress 1 year ago

Sometimes the best advice is simple and easy to over look.
Get the levels right first 🤯.
I didn’t even really realize I wasn’t doing that until now.
Thank you!!

One thing that helped me gain clarity while EQing is thinking of the sound as energy. There are so many ways to associate sounds with something - another sound you’re familiar with, an idea in your head, a mix-move you’re preoccupied with and imposing on the sound. Those all fail to some degree to respond to the mix as a whole. When I think of each sound as raw energy contributing to the whole mix, it’s very easy to get that static balance. It’s also easy to see where certain parts of the energy, whether that be EQ or dynamics, are helping and hurting the mix.

Joe, as always, you hit the nail on the head and drive it home in one blow. I have so many questions on mixing and mastering but I will not ask them here. I am on a budget and saving up to sign on to your mix and mastering course. Way to go.

@RogerRocha-us2wj 1 year ago

I totally agree with all 3 of your concepts & find them reliable not to mention so easy to do. Thanx for sharing Joe.

@1:20 - hell the government are the most guilty of the counterfeit, I mean they just print up paper with nothing to back it - same concept really huh? lol
you’re the man Joe!
