Im 7 minutes into this and feel the need to comment, ive been recording for about 18 months, realised I wasn't as good at playing as I thought, kept messing around watching your videos on mixing, now ive got better at playing this is the pep talk I needed to keep me on track to do something and stop the ive got to learn more phase, thank you

I fired up the computer today, and started working on learning more about making music and it occurred to me that I spend an inordinate amount of time trying to improve and very little actually making music.

...and then I spent the next 40 minutes watching this video because I can't help myself. :D

Just started to record at home so I am getting in as much knowledge as I can. This is one of the more helpful channels I have found so far. I am new to all of it except for playing instruments.

Asking the right questions reminds me of when I was a software developer. When you got stuck on a really tough problem, you would do "rubber ducky debugging" which was explain the issue to a rubber duck on your desk. By the time you got through explaining it, everything would clear up in your mind and a solution would present itself. I think this applies here as well. It's too easy to get bogged down in the details. Sometimes you have to take a step back and have a simple Q&A with yourself (or rubber ducky) to get unstuck.

This intro is soo key. I started to dabble with recording a few years ago as a teen, and fast forward to last year I decided to just try it again and hone in on the basic skills through your videos. Now next Friday I’m releasing my 5th cover song release! And by doing this process over and over it has developed my songwriting to a point I have now a few great songs to begin recording towards an original EP. The key is just to start to release and not wait for perfection, cause it will never come. Thanks Joe for all your help and knowledge that you share!

Six minutes in, reminds me, I'm a self taught animator. When I got my first job I had more technical knowledge than people that had been working for several years. I figure my thinking is, if I stay at home sharpening my knife the whole time, at some point someone's going to come knocking asking..  I'm ground that knife down to a needle by now!!

Joe Gilder your channel is my favorite because You Are always honest helpful and have genuine integrity. Youve taught me so much and encouraged my music-making journey more than you know!!!!!🙏

My problem is that I hate the tracking phase. I find it both tedious and nerve-wracking to play the same part over and over with a red light blinking at me and a click in my headphones. If I could afford to pay people to perform all the parts I write, I would. I love songwriting, arranging, sound selection, and mixing. Hate the "being a performing monkey" part. The result is that I end up taking shortcuts in that part of the process.

Probably the best explanation to capturing your creative music side and recording it on the inter-web. This video should be going viral for the home studio and some pro studios out there!

Another thing might have been what engineers call Rubber Ducking. You leave a message with the problem, and your right brain comes up with a solution just because you talked it into a message

I appreciate both the long format and the short format. A video like this is production strategy, whereas a lot of the shorter ones are tactical, like how to use a particular plug-in to achieve a specific effect.

The mixing game changer for me was panning. If you dont come from a musical background and dont know how bands distribute their instruments on the stage you're gonna have a hard time mixing. Panning, using compression and reverb for depth allows you to place the instruments in the room just like in real life so everything has its own space.

Thanks Joe,
I can say that keeping my attention for 39 mins on YouTube is something very rare. This was very interresting, strait forward and specially, very needed in my present musical journey. Long live your channel.
Sly

thank you Joe for this; thank you, We all needed to hear this even though it hurt.

Joe, the longer format is great.  Whatever it takes to get your point across on deeper topics.  And, if you wanted to, you could always put your longer-form videos into their own playlist - or even a separate YT channel.

To answer the question posed at the beginning: I'm at the point where I have my songs written - and I can play them on guitar or bass - but I open Cubase and I'm just staring at it.

Never podcast on an empty stomach 😂 25:59

Great video, Joe! I haven't watch all of your videos, but I sure have watched a lot of them. You are very relatable. You have a way of explaining things that fit me perfectly. To the folks who are just starting to lean multitrack recording. If they are overwhelmed by all the plugins etc, I suggest they just get their tracks recorded, and into the DAW. Don't worry about plugins until you have played with mic positions and mixing the levels of those tracks. Then start with a simple plugin as needed. Like an EQ. To me this is the most useful plugin to start with. The more you do this, the better you'll get. Again, great video Joe!

Your videos, everything actually gives the exact explanation I wanted. Not just coolness, because it comes out naturally from you but informative and inspiring
