If you have a table, you have a board game table.

I don't buy plastic bags I just compile all the extra baggies from every game into one huge box. I will never run out.

I think a category you missed is lighting. Good lighting is essential for a board game playing space.

No upgrade is worth it IF: you don’t love the game.

If you love the game, then whatever makes you happy.

I enjoy painting minis, and my personal rule is not to play any of my games until the minis are painted, so they always look better than cardboard standees.

Chopsticks for snacks. Dont cheap out

Chair option nailed it. Great mention

I'll admit, I expected 'never cheap out' on board game tables because I figured regular tables weren't in the running. My assumption is that really cheap board game tables are probably the worst, even compared to similarly priced dining room tables.

With regards to snacks, I have PTSD from a campaign where my friends and I played through Jaws of the Lion. My friend brought like chips cheese cone that were dipped into liquid cheese. These chip cones were leaving stains everywhere and were super greasy. The molten cheese got everywhere. It was literally the worst thing that he could have brought along for a board game night.

For Board Game bag, I use a soft ice chest that collapses down and it cost like $15.
And it is insulated and water tight. That's a win!

I do cheap perfect fit sleeves for boardgames cards. It feels better than penny sleeves and it still protects the cards

With dice I definitely agree that dice, fancy or not, need to be very clear and easy to read. If the fancy dice are clearly readable, then upgrade for those games that you'll use more often.  I own two sets of good quality Deadlands pokrer chips and I use these as tokens in other rpg games where you're tracking a variable mechanic.

This was a fantastic discussion. Another good one would be something like a lessons learned from playing so many games. For instance, related to game tables, what is the optimal size or shape so its not too large but still can accomodate lots of table hog games.

I like the card sleeves that stick the cards together. Sleeved used games are always fun.

I’d like to see a video with a list of games that benefit most from upgrading

"I play GMT games" is the most passive flex of the millennium.

Value is highly subjective and I appreciate that both of you had pretty different opinions on some items.

For anyone who's creative and likes painting minis, 3D printing components / trays, or even building your own table there can be an immense amount of value from using the thing AND knowing you created it exactly to your preference. I spent probably 2 dozen hours building a recessed table out of cherry wood w led lighting, magnetic cup holders etc and every time I use it I'm so glad I went to the trouble and spent a bit more than I do on some woodworking projects. The table is also large enough to hold any game I have ever played and is a dedicated space where I can leave out huge campaigns for weeks (Frosthaven etc)

Im sure others who create custom stuff for their setup feel the same since it's truly yours. I've never painted minis or built a 3D grid for a dnd style game but can see why people love that too. I'd say if you have the urge to try any of those then go for it!

Im not gonna agree with the cheapest option guy on a lot of items.
Since the cheapest option can sometimes make the tiny annoying things that make a game unfun.

In general, I’d say it’s not worth skimping on quality if it comes at the expense of practicality. Premium components matter if you play frequently and the cardboard is likely to wear out; upgrading to acrylic tokens or metal coins can extend the game's lifespan, though the need for replacements depends on the original quality. Card sleeves are useful for protection, but you can do without them if it’s a "one-and-done" type of game. Nothing was said about game organizers; they are purely for convenience—though perhaps you don't mind having components piled up on the table. What I definitely dislike are plastic miniatures; unpainted gray plastic usually looks worse than illustrated cardboard tokens or standees, yet plastic significantly drives up the price and box size. That said, if you’re willing to pay for professional painting, it becomes the best option. Table size is important, too; many games require a lot of space, and a large table won't come cheap. As for chairs, comfort is key—price doesn't matter, as expensive ones aren't always comfortable. The same applies to your fellow players: the main thing is that they’re fun to be around; where you find them matters less. I am strictly against eating at the table; it’s better to take a break and eat separately.

This was more interesting than I expected, I would have also added something about acrylic tokens vs cardboard but It's more or less the same discussion you had about coins... Well done overall👍🏻
