Tom Vasel, Zee Garcia, and Chris Yi take a look at their top 10 board games that have an app implementation that perhaps plays better than the physical version or that they'd sooner turn to than playing the physical game.

Spirit Island, the amount of upkeep it saves me is insane!

My number 1 is Battle Chess. It really spares you the overhead of acting out the fights and making the sound FX yourself.

Strangely I played Through the Ages app first, then tried the boardgame but the boardgame was more fun since you get to play with real people and you're more aware of the mechanics

Azul, Ticket to Ride and Cubirds, all games with a ton of set up, shuffling, annoyance. And they all play super smooth and 3x as fast on BGA.

Ascension is also interesting in that there is an "app-only promo pack" that introduces "portals", which are cards you buy and then they turn into a random card of a comparable value from any set - including sets you might not even have bought as DLC yet...

The apps that came to mind for me are already on these lists, so I won't repeat them. But I also like the Spirit Island app for two reasons. The app manages the invader phase, so the player doesn't have to worry about forgetting steps or what regions are being defended. And on the app, I don't have to worry about my cat jumping onto the table and playing with all of the pieces.

When I play the Ticket to Ride app, my wife and I take turns acquiring every single train card then, once the deck has been exhausted, we speed run laying down every train route in a train-pocalypse that buries the map in chaos and fun. 10/10 would recommend especially since it's something you can only do in the app.

I get Zee’s addition of Cartographers on this list, but if you’re someone who enjoys the craftiness of the game doing some drawing or colouring, the physical game is pretty amazing.

i think one deck dungeon deserves a spot on this top 10

Cascadia is available app now and I love it.

Onirim! I spent hours playing it on my phone.

As a solo player, my top pick is Dune Imperium. The app is well done and the physical edition isn't so amazing-looking and tactile that I miss it. Dire Wolf Digital make excellent apps in general. Special mention to Raiders of the North Sea!

41:25 I also will solo play Dominion in this way, randomly drawing 10 cards and saying “ the deck on the left will try to work with these two cards and the deck on the right with those two cards” Tom is making me glad I’m not the only one.

You can often undo mistakes in Terraforming Mars by closing the app and reopening it as long as you don't do anything else.

Pathfinder the Adventure Card Game is one that I spent a small fortune on getting all of the expansions only for the app to come along and completely replace it for 10 bucks. There's still some fun to be had rolling all of those dice yourself, but it's just so convenient to do it on the computer.

Great call on Charterstone, Tom. 👏👏👏

I have played so clever over 40 times... still chasing that 300 too. We will get there someday Chris.

I love Cartographers app. But wish that there was a map that you could just use while playing with the game so you don’t have to have the pages. Each person could use their phone.

High on this list for me would be Paperback. Fun game that is undermined by the fact that sorting all the stacks of letter cards is a real pain to set up and manage. But the app handles it so easily.
