What movie should we watch next?

Did they have underwater cameras in the 1970s? Kids these days!

Younger generations are hilarious. Did they have underwater cameras in 1975? The first underwater photograph was taken in 1856. The first underwater movie, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was in 1916.

22:55 - Old Ben Gardener is undefeated in jump scares. He's scarier than the shark. 😂

You know that story he told about the USS Indianapolis is true, don’t you?  The ship that delivered the bomb, then got torpedoed and sunk and most of the men got eaten by sharks is true.  You can look it up and read about it.  That scene is one of my favorite scenes from any movie I have ever seen.

And absolutely no CGI.

Don't miss "Psycho". Forget about Jaws sequels.

The '70s was a golden age for practical effects.

Newflash:  sharks do attack people at random.  You're hundreds of times more likely to be killed by lightning than by a shark, but that shares one thing in common:  being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

We had underwater cameras back then
But we didn’t have any electricity until way back in 1998

@4:20  They're drinking alka-seltzer, to settle their stomachs.  It's implied they got sick to their stomachs after seeing the remains.

Back in 1975 they had smoking sections in hospitals ,airplanes, restaurants. You name it there was a place to smoke

Never forget, when you go swimming in the ocean, you just put yourself at the bottom of the food chain

You can absolutely "drown" a shark—or more accurately, cause it to asphyxiate—by stopping its forward momentum. Here is how that works for a Great White like the one in Jaws: Unlike many fish, Great Whites are "obligate ram ventilators." This means they don't have the muscles to pump water over their gills while sitting still. They must swim forward with their mouths open to "ram" oxygen-rich water through their gill slits. If a shark is prevented from moving forward, it can no longer "breathe." Stopping their movement is effectively the same as a human holding their breath; if they can't restart that flow of water, they lose consciousness and die. By luring the shark into the shallows, Quint is trying to use the seafloor as an anchor. In shallow water, the shark’s massive body scrapes the bottom, creating enough friction and drag to slow it down or beach it entirely. Once the shark is pinned or slowed down enough by the sand, it can’t maintain the speed required for ram ventilation, and it essentially "drowns."

Let's all take a second to appreciate the mayor's anchor sportcoat...

FYI, that strange liquid the guy and the cop were drinking after finding Chrissy's remains was Alka Seltzer, an ant-acid medicine for upset stomach. Not a lot of people catch that.

About drowning a shark: Drowning is basically just a form of asphyxiation - the inability to get enough oxygen to stay alive. Land animals extract oxygen from the air through our lungs. Fish extract it from the water through their gills. If there's not enough air in a space, we won't be able to get enough oxygen, and we'll die of asphyxiation. If there's not enough water in an area, a fish won't be able to get enough oxygen, and it will asphyxiate. And since they're doing it in water, Quint called it drowning. I saw this happen once to a school of bluefish driven into shallows by a predator near a dock where I was birdwatching. It was pretty tragic, actually. A big shark like the one in this movie needs open ocean, not only so it can keep moving to keep water flowing through its gills, but also to get enough oxygen. That's really the key. There are areas in the Atlantic and especially the Pacific called "dead zones" where the water has a low oxygen content. No big fish can survive in those zones even though there's plenty of water. Fish need the oxygen. Quint's plan would have worked if the boat had been in good order, and if he hadn't pushed it too hard in his panic.

Now imagine watching this in theaters when it came out! Yes, we had theatres in the stone age

2:07 - no, sharks have had a reputation as man eaters long before THIS flick (there are even old pirate novels in which they're depicted as such, for example). And the reason they rarely attack people in real life is simply because they rarely even encounter humans in the first place.

Great Whites have to keep moving forward to force oxygen-rich water across their gills, If they stop, they risk suffocation.

"Did they even have underwater cameras at this point?" Yeah. But they still had to use a candle in a watertight box for lighting...(lol)
