Thank you so much for taking the time to react to this video. I honestly didn’t expect to see a reaction to it. I really appreciate it! ❤

0:54 That „Skeptical“ Major was recalled in 2022 because of a series of scandals, one of which led to him getting fined for more than 20k Euros due to something similar to „political bribery“ later on. The recall vote went through with a whooping 95% of the votes in favor of the recall… and during (and even before) the recall campaign, some local media refered to him as Frankfurt‘s „Sun King“ due to his behavior… He even snatched the Europa League trophy from Eintracht Frankfurt‘s team captain on the way to the public celebration on the Town Hall balcony, which was held in front of tens of thousands of soccer fans… and as a Fan of Eintracht Frankfurt, I will NEVER FORGET and NEVER FORGIVE that particular transgression.

3:28 It was functional. (The stuff in the windows are not always blinds, but sometimes the backs of filing cabinets, of the City‘s Planning Authority, or some other department that had to do with construction, planning and maintenance of buildings.) The real practical problem with the building was that it was built with LOTS of asbestos…

11:07 you said they look very new, and they dont look like they are old and from the actual time period, but I think this is actually a positive thing, because this style could look just as new with the means of one or two hundred years ago, if it was made new or renovated alot, or if the city invested alot into it and so on.
This is in a very big city, so it might not be very accurate for them to look very old and used and not renovated and renewed and so on.
In much more rural areas on the other hand its probably as you said I guess, there houses probably would look more used and less in perfect condition.
The used look is interesting aswell, but might not fit very well inside a very big city with alot of resources and so on, whether in todays age, or in the past.

edit: I think the understanding that buildings in the past looked less perfected, comes from the fact that many things that still exist from the past are very old, or they might appear in rural areas where they maybe arent renovated as much and as perfectly, but people long time ago were able to build incredible things, but sometimes we get the impression that everything looked old and without color and so on.

Good old Peter Feldmann. Germanys most awkward mayor that had to be thrown out of the office by a referendum because he didn't wanted to go...

4:48 That „young architect“ is from our DESPICABLE neighbouring town, Offenbach… and over the last two decades, he has become an important political figure in his party, the conservative CDU.

2:30 And it was designet to be like that. The Allies were specifically looking for tighly built Medieval city centres and would open with Blockbuster Bomb -> useless against armor etc. but purely to create a massive air pressure wave to break windows and remove shingled roofs and leave a debris field in every street and alley. That would be followed with white phosphorous incendiary bombs to drop straight into the half-timbered homes without roofs and the the debris in the streets, to create an absolute inferno in those residential Areas. It's not like we Germans could ever really complain about war crimes, given the scales of what either side did, but that deliberate Strategy - they did reseach on where those vulnerable city centres were and targeted them specifically - would certainly put into question the character of anyone involved and at the very least points to the most deplorable type of overzealousness (is what Brits might say to make it sound nicer).

They look new because they are new. There is nothing historical about them except the style.

5:19 sure, he missed something that hadn’t been there when he was born….

3:53 I mean… I was living in Frankfurt, as I have been since 1972, and I still do, and I can’t really say that I ever had the Impression that the whole population was enraged about this… it was a couple of conservatives who unfortunately dominated those few media who even bothered to mention this… After all, those „medieval“ houses had already gone for six decades…

As fascinating and “beautiful” as the New Old Town may be, in the end, it is just one possible approach to revitalizing city centers, and Frankfurt is paying a price for this type of development in other ways.

For one thing, it is, after all, a reconstruction. It is not the original, and only a few of the buildings are genuine reconstructions. Much of it is simply Disneyland, however much people might like to deny it. Not only because of its pseudo-medieval style, but also because hardly anyone actually lives there. They are façades, little more than movie sets.

There are reasons why nobody builds houses like these anymore, with their low ceilings, tiny windows, and steep roofs: they are impractical. There is very little natural light, the balconies are tiny, and the courtyards are dark. Nobody is going to pay the exorbitant prices that come with such a location only to end up with such impractical living space in return.

The initial euphoria that followed the opening has faded, and the New Old Town has not become the trendy, sought-after neighborhood some might have hoped for. The public authorities that used to occupy buildings in the area cannot make much use of houses like these either.

So the entire development was built without any real regard for actual needs and, yes, realistically speaking, it is essentially a Disneyland with no real practical purpose.

The fact that some of the buildings serve merely as emergency exits or stairwells for other buildings is telling in itself. It shows that the project was more concerned with appearances than with actual usability.

a real pleasant suprise seeing you check this guy's channel out,he does these videos about the restoring of german pre war architecture quite often, id definitely recommend more of the aesthetic's city's content!
