12:04 That can't be the case, the first Bob-omb Buddy says "ever since the Big Bob-omb got his paws on the Power Star", meaning he was already around.

I love these "Let's look at every single detail of this particular level, section, cutscene..." kind of video.

I never thought about the fact that this level was practically the first level in ANY 3d platformer like this. This is like analyzing the tutorial-y nature of world 1-1. Wow.

I'd argue it's likely the Black Bob-Ombs knew you were an enemy simply by knowing who you were and the political situation of the war. Basically, they're apparently allies of Bowser and likely at war with The Mushroom Kingdom. This makes Mario automatically an enemy, and Mario is famous enough that they'd likely know who he is on sight.

I love how the king is like you said arrogant but still honorable. He is a king and took over the battlefield but still admits when he is defeated. The voice you gave him made him feel much more personable to me.

"my ideas cooler, so it's CANNON now?" Ah. I get it

if we can all be real, we all got the "Mario wings into the sky" star without the wing cap at least once. it takes a long while but it is hella worth it.

I still can't believe how they nailed the movement, the controls, the presentation, and the level design. All in their first 3d game.

Fun fact: In the DS version of the game, if you try to shoot at the island from this cannon in a mission that isn't related to the island, a water bomb will shoot you out of the air

"I'd explain why they're called a masscare, but they've been massacred"

Making goomba tires since 1996

Mario 64 might have aged with time, but Bob-Omb Battlefield has not aged in the slightest. A classic level from a classic game.

As a Mario 64 content creator
BOB is one of the best levels to create stuff in or around so BOB is awesome in that regard too, it has almost everything you can need, a tall mountain, a floating island, a gate, small mountains, the chain chomp witht he gate, the Bob Ombs, a bunch of enemies, it's really great
And I'm also a programmer and considering this is the first big 3D game I'm absolutely amazed of how this game turned out to be, it has sooo much stuff that many people don't appreciate or even don't even get to know they could do even after a run of the game.
I really love SM64 and the amazing stories that form around it, and all those little details, amazing :D
Also you can throw a Bob Omb to the Chain Chomp xD

It's the ultimate introduction level and has a banger sound track

Anyone noticed he continues the trend of matching whatever numbers shown in a game with the time his video ends?

I didn’t even think he’d be able to pull that off since there’s no in-game time counter but somehow he still does with the game’s HUD at the end

Now imagine being like 10, after years of 2d gaming, playing something like Mario 64? Growing up in that era was so cool in that each new console was drastically different. Playing Mario 64 for the first time in a Toys R Us was amazing... until Mario turned it off and said "Thank you for playing Nintendo 64, who's next?" and I would be like "me, I am next forever" lol

A group of precisely three Goombas in a triangle is called a "spawner" :)

Something possibly of note you didn't mention: In case King Bob-omb's hint wasn't enough, and you're completely stumped on how to defeat him, there's another clue. King Bob-omb is a giant Bob-omb. How do you defeat the regular Bob-ombs? Picking them up and throwing them.

Indeed, it's such a brilliant way to start the game. This area feels like home after 5 minutes of play, how about that?! Its main path is straight forward but it's not all there is of course, and thanks to the moderate size and clear objectives (how can you resist to climbing the mountain or interacting with the chain chomp which is in the middle of the main path you're already following) exploration is quite comfortable. It's also really easy to get anywhere in no time, which is not achieved in every Mario 64 stage. This in not my favourite 64 stage (that goes to whomp's fortress) but it's definetly close and for the first level of the first collectathon it couldn't have been much better than this. Congrats 👌

Race wars exist even in Mario games.
