According to Shigefumi Hino, the action where a blue Pikmin can rescue a drowning Pikmin was added by Yuji Kando without the knowledge of the developers. The programmers added lots of gestures to the Pikmin on their own.

You forgot the fact that Pikmin cannot drown in Pikmin Bloom, even if it's a Red walking through the Mariana Trench.

The blues in Pikmin 3 all stare at this drowning Pikmin and are like “someone else will save them” perpetuating the bystander effect

I've always felt this mechanic should return. It's really niche and hard to get value out of but I did find myself using it quite a bit in Pikmin 1-2 and found myself missing in 3-4.

I really hope it comes back.

Idea for Pikmin 5: The Lifeguard ability is back but only when the drowning Pikmin and Blue Pikmin are at the same level.

So they can watch in terror when that 1 Pikmin in the group annoys me and I throw them in the water on purpose

I didn't even know this feature existed until Pikmin 4 came out. That's how relevant it's been. I don't even remember if any Let's Players that I watched used it to show it off in the first two games.

They should make Blue Pikmin be life guards for everyone except for red leaf Pikmin, they outright just drown those guys.
