This video is mainly on the history, but the current position of the sinners prayer is in the exact place baptism used to be for many people. If the sacraments are just symbols, why was the sinner's prayer put in the place baptism used to be?

From a protestant perspective, what is interesting is that this view that we are observing was not the view of the Reformers; not the View of even the more radical reformers like the XVII century Baptists and not the view of John Wesley. Even the Campbell-Stone movement afirmed baptism as an objective act that cleanses sins.

This movement only sprung in the 1800s with Finneyite theology.

Thank you for this look at persons and beliefs that have led many to disregard baptism and replace it with The Sinner's Prayer.

My grandparents stressed learning to read because then one could read the Bible for oneself, and not depend on others' assessment of what mattered and what didn't.  They had favorite individual verses for sure, but they thought it was even more important to study the Bible as a whole, to observe themes God was repeating throughout the scriptures.  If one researches each mention of the words baptize and baptism in the New Testament, one can see it was of great importance to the various persons who implemented it, no doubt because it was what Christ commanded when he commissioned the eleven to make disciples of all nations.  New Testament writers talked about baptism's significance and even applied the concept of baptism to such major Old Testament events as Noah's flood and the Israelites' crossing through the Red Sea as directed by Moses.  

The more one knows about recurring themes in the Bible, the harder it is to set baptism aside!

I can only speak to my own experience being raised Southern Baptist where baptism was seen as a mere outward sign of an earlier inward change at the altar call....

Looking back, I now see that, because salvation was tied to a one-time decision for Christ at the altar call after which I was taught salvation could not be lost, I was left on my own with no further instruction on how I was to now live my new Christian life.

I now believe the effect of 'once saved always saved' was the cause for my slide back into sin. (Note: I'm aware that such Baptist teach that I was still saved.. vs.. I was never saved to begin with).

Because my church offered no demonstrative need for future confession and repentance, I was simply left to continue living in sin always hoping they were right and I was saved. I repeated the altar call and baptism trying to get something to stick.

Having shared my experience, I truly believe there were/are sincere Baptists and others who went/go on to live a Christian life worthy of God's calling. Still, I choose to believe that it was through the power of baptism they received that fuller grace to live so even though their theology had relegated baptism to a mere ordinance. God's blessings to all our Protestant brethren. 🙏🙏🙏

I had my kids watch the new Jesus movie called "Light of the World". It was the one that was promoted for having old school animation like Aladdin and other disney films. However, it explicitely teaching a symbolic view of baptism. In the film John the Baptist tell the young John ""Baptism is a way of saying to God, 'I turn away from my darkness, and I choose your light instead.'" (It's correct that John's baptism was not the same and was just a sign and preparation but no distinction is given.) Later after the ascension John's dad wants to become a Christian and John leads him in a version of the sinner's prayer which is "The Salvation Poem". The most Anabaptist movie I've ever seen.
