By default, a half-press of the shutter button on Fujifilm cameras locks both focus and exposure at the same time. That works in a lot of situations, but when your subject and your metering reference aren't in the same place, you need more control.
In this video, I cover two ways to separate focus lock and exposure lock on Fujifilm cameras.
The first method uses back-button focus for AF and the shutter half-press for AE lock. It's a simpler setup and works well for quick shots, but the shutter button is sensitive enough that it's not ideal if you need to hold exposure lock for any length of time.
The second method also uses back-button focus for AF, but assigns AE lock to a separate dedicated button, which you can use as an on/off toggle. This gives you more control and flexibility.
