How to Fail in Style - Bird Photography in a BEAUTIFUL Welsh Forest

Hafren Forest is a stunning area consisting of primary Pine trees planted in the 1930's, it features a boardwalk through a section meaning individuals with mobility issues also have the oppurtunity to enjoy the woodland. Pretty cool right?

I recently popped down for a spot of wildlife photography, surely there's some birds around, right?

Not a fail in my eyes. As a photographer who loves both wildlife and landscape photography this looks like a perfect location to visit to me, so thanks for posting the vlog.

Wildlife will be wildlife and it will turn up when it's ready that's the beauty of nature. At least you had a great day out and a good walk. Thanks again for sharing

Really nice video - very calming experience - even if no birds - looks like great place to visit

Hello Old friend. Good to hear your voice after so long. Even if not much wildlife, very good place to go by the looks of it and great views so worth the watch. 😊

Hi Damien. Another vote from me for Wales! I always visit at least once each year. Lovely snowy landscape even if you had limited opportunities to see many birds other than the super-tough Goldcrests and its nemesis the Sparrowhawk plus the Stonechat. Willow Tit is a very scarce bird now, it’s a shame you didn’t nail the ID. Sometimes just getting out in nature is enough to recharge us. Thank you for sharing your experience.

oh my word - you promised and delivered, this really is a fairytale landscape (and has quite some similarities to my home area). Time spent in nature, especially in an area as beautiful as this one, can never be a failure. And you saw goldcrests, that alone makes it a success for me, I love those midget birds😄. One last remark, (then I'm done blabbing😁): River sources have always something magical imo and even more so when they grow into a river that means something to us. Thanks for showing us around😊

Loved this video and seeing the source of the Severn. Weather and time of year might well have limited what you saw. Blanket coniferous forest reduces species count too. A fine sunny day in Feb/March/early April might produce displaying raptors. I think you can be more sure of your Willow Tit record. I would have personally counted it as one! It looked right to me on the brief bit of footage and certainly by habitat. Willow Tit are fast disappearing, but do inhabit coniferous areas in the west. Marsh Tits will prefer more deciduous woodland or at least a mixed woodland.
If you like those sorts of areas, I'd also recommend similar ones closer to the Midlands. For example, Mortimer Forest west of Ludlow and Bury Ditches in the Clun Valley. High Vinnalls carpark (Mortimer Forest) is one of the best areas to start from. The forest is good for Crossbill, Pied Flycatcher, Wood Warbler, Tree Pipits, raptors and Marsh Tits. I've also had Willow Tits there too. Good for the Wood White butterfly as well. Plenty of walks in the area and a panoramic view from the top of High Vinnalls, which on a late morning/early afternoon visit at this time of year in sunny and slightly breezy conditions should reward you with raptors...
