Every expensive bike video has the same comment section, and I finally figured out who everyone's actually yelling at.

You forgot the biggest expense, the cost of drinking alcohol each week.

I don't do expensive bikes, because I suffer from chronic buyers remorse. But I'm here for your personality and presentation. Yeah .. so ..

If someone asks about how much my bikes cost, if they are not into cycling I don’t tell them and change the topic.

Unfortunately ALOT of the YT bike channels focus on the high end stuff that most can't afford, want or need.
More mid-level content that the majority want.

Also buying end of season or used (3-4 yrs old) can save you thousands on a upper mid-tier rig. Mine was about $8K new, paid $3.4K, does the job.

I think that realistically... the bikes in the 1800-2400 range are best value. Mid to high tier mechanical groupsets, more left over to upgrade touch points.

Eh, no one is forcing anyone into buying a brand new bike. There's so many good used bikes out there. New stuff is fun though.

I think part of the problem is not that expensive bikes exist, but that the high priced bikes are what tend to be featured on social media, YouTube, etc. It establishes an expectation (for some folks) that if one is serious about cycling then they will have (or at least want) a $5k+ ride. Even channels that focus on alt-cycling still feature bikes that are multiple thousands of dollars for a bike.
It doesn't really bother me (anymore) and I was never one to complain about the prices in comments, but it does leave me less interested in content focusing or featuring top tier bikes.
You make a point, though, that it could be worse. At least once you have the bike(s), the cost to run is pretty low.

Side note - neat little Vox amp in the background. What is it?

0:55 The problem with this analogy is, that brands like Specialized, Cannondale, Scott, Enve, Allied, Cervelo, etc. will happily sell you a product that's mid-range in terms of quality, but it'll be priced as if it was high-end. And these rip-off tactics are what people get angry about.

Comparison is a thief of joy.

Historical Reenactment cost: don't ask.

Looking at the new Specialized Crux pricing... this is totally insane. The good news is that many Chinese manufacturers, like X-Lab, are entering the market and supporting local bike shops.

The more I spend on a bike the less likely I am to use it hard. It was a hard lesson to learn.

Imagine someone being judged for running in old, low/mid-tier shoes, being constantly told by people how much time they’d save by buying top of the line shoes. Why does riding a bike feel like this obsession over bike stats? It would be far more impressive to ride a cheap bike 50 miles than something 100% optimized for efficiency and comfort. Buying “the thing” will not make your life any better. Appreciate what you’ve got and ride ✌🏾

What I like best is building good bikes for as little as possible, though hunting for cheap secondhand deals, bartering, etc. If you're resourceful, it's amazing what you can manage.

I bike and golf, and have spent quite a bit of money on both. There is a balance between spending money wisely and enjoying having nice stuff.

I have been absolutely whooped by people with less expensive equipment in both sports, and in both cases I have some things that are more expensive than they have to be for bling factor (Thomson stems, Scotty Cameron Putter).

Buy nice things if can can afford to, but don’t let the existence of expensive things make you feel bad about what you have.
