So much has changed! I'm first to test Australia spec MG4 Essence 64 (2026 version) media loan. Does it still have that fun RWD balance and handling?
Don't judge it by the outside. It looks nearly identical to the version that launched here in 2023 but under the skin there are many differences to the battery, heating, charging, speed, weight, software and more!
Inside, MG has borrowed styling and software from its newer EV models, so the screen and menus feel a generation ahead of the old car.
Some things got better. Some things, especially in the back seat have stayed stubbornly the same and I don't think that's good enough for 2026.
I walk through the whole car outside and inside giving you all the changes and what's new that MG fixed or improved.

Viewer Dave Smith sent a very good guess about the suspension: "Just a thought on the suspension - given it has an extra 100kg in battery cells and is lugging it all down-low, that might be working better with the existing suspension setup. The suspension might not have been updated from the '22-'25 model. My '25 51 isn't exactly a harsh ride when driving solo (it's quite firm), but it soaks up bumps better when I've got passengers.
I know they're worlds apart but back when I had a Hilux it rode a lot better including soaking up bumps when either the tub was loaded or when I was towing."
