Rittenhouse Rye Bottled in Bond is a 100-proof Pennsylvania-style rye with a reputation—and going into this tasting, we really wanted to love it.

And that nose?

Wow.

Pepper, cinnamon, caramel, vanilla, maple and even a little biscuit had us wondering if we'd just found a new favorite whiskey.

Then we tasted it.

In this episode of The Tasting Room, we're tasting Rittenhouse Rye Bottled in Bond neat and digging into its aroma, rye spice, oak and barrel char, 100-proof alcohol presence, sweetness—or lack thereof—and whether all that time in the barrel helps or hurts the experience.

We also compare it to some familiar whiskeys, talk about why we think this one might work better over a large ice ball, and ultimately give it a score on our completely serious 1-to-11 scale.

Is Rittenhouse Rye a great whiskey?

For us, not quite.
But it's still a very good one—and definitely an interesting look at Pennsylvania-style rye.
