When the first half is just toxic yaoi and the second half is doomed yaoi. Ok honestly the lyric dissection of the first song was amazing!!!! Great video

the idea of needing to be cheered up and then putting on FALSETTOS

Jason being the center of everything is also showing how children are in the middle of these situations and how it affects them wether you see it or not-

Id like to mention that as the story progresses in the revival, the block thats used as the set pieces is slowly replaced by more realistic furniture. I think this is a manifestation of the relationships becoming a lot more real and authentic, grounded in reality. Until Whizzer's whole hospital set is an actual hospital set. I domt think there is any piece of the block there.

FALSETTOS VIDEO ESSAY IN 2026!!!!

"rent feels like a queer musical that was made for straight people" you put it into words EXACTLYY

2:35 hold up, hold up, these lesbians are here because lesbian doctors were some of the most active in the helping queer people in the aids pandemic, NOT JUST FOR THE VIBES!!! They’re there for the real life historical significance!!! That’s also why they’re at the start of “LGBTQ+” if I’m not mistaken.  (Okay pressing play, love the video so far thanks)

som fun facts: we never acc hear cordelia and charlottes names in the show! this shows the erasure of lesbian nurses during the crisis. william finn was also jewish. this officially is an opera ! the mention of stds in love is blind is great foreshadowing!

When I got my last metal/punk band together, I looked around at a bunch of lesbians, the other songwriter was also Jewish, and proposed we call the band "Four Bitches In A Room Jewing." No one else laughed. Their loss.

Fun thing about the song where Marvin makes up with Jason is that Jason sings the same melody he sang in a previous song but in a lower key, signifying him becoming more mature and his voice dropping😌

Funny thing- I lowkey assumed Marvin’s last name was Falsetto for the longest time because… well just because.

I’d watch a video dissecting every single lyric in this musical

I'm not gonna lie, I would listen to more in depth lyric analysis of the songs on this musical. Thank you for sharing your thought on Falsettos. It definitely deserves more paise.

Great video, but I have one critique: Charlotte and Cordelia are there for a lot more than just vibes. I think a big thing that helped Marvin grow as a person was making friends with two women who he has no power over. They are always on equal ground, and it’s clear from the baseball scene that they (particularly Charlotte) are willing to call Marvin on his bullshit. Knowing them for two years probably helped Marvin reframe his view of femininity. They are also a model to him of living in a queer relationship.

i remember being in the falsettos fandom on tumblr in like 2017 and there was so much discourse about "everyone shut up about the bed the bed literally doesn't mean anything" but now i'm here 9 years later and halfway through a master's degree in poetry i'm SO glad someone is finally making the lyrical analysis we all need

sometimes I forget that Falsettos is actually called Falsettos because ive never watched it so in my head it's just called "The Time Emmett Forrest and Trent Oliver Became Gay For Each Other"

also wdym "i hit my ex-wife when I'm drunk" guy, "im an evil tv" guy, and "im a lawyer and my gf is awesome!" guy are played by the same person

if I were to explain how much I enjoyed Falsettos it’d either be 3 hours long or I would just make you watch it 😭😭😭

24:12 as someone who's Jewish I can confirm that it's accurate. The reason I love fjiarb is because of how head on the stereotypes are displayed in a satirical way. Also just in general. I am upset that there hasn't been an all-Jewish cast of falsettos yet, but other than that it's a fantastic musical.

Would love a line by line analysis lmao, love Falsettos so much! Thanks for feeding us Falsettolings

Falsettos rabbit hole is a lot deeper than it may seem. In trousers lyrics also contain a lot of deep characterisation of Marvin (and I'm not even talking about Falsettoland workshop version with plenty of cut moments of character development). So yeah, it is so gay and thoughtful and I love it deeply. Thanks for this video essay as a reminder of it <3
