Emergency Entitlement (story 3):
I’m choosing to believe that the emergency patient survived that ordeal just to spite that horrible woman.

What a best way to spend April 1st. Laughing at entitled people getting their dues.

The Argentine woman referring to being a "carpet" took me a minute, then I realized that in English we would say "doormat."  Interesting translation of an idiom.

"Sorete" apparently means turd btw XDD It's used in the same way "piece of shit" is used in English.

Gotta love the "I am never coming here again!" types. We get 'em in my store, and once they storm out, I say, "Please, punish us some more. Thank you."

The Cousin Saga 1, your question about deprogramming an adult:  Short answer is yes, it's possible.

Long answer is:  they have to be willing to get that help, and it's going to take work and honesty on their part, and a really good therapist who knows how to work with them to get them in order.  I had to unlearn some bad behaviors myself so I speak from experience in deprogramming.

In the sister's case, she seems quite beyond the point of no return what with the entire family spurning her now, so that might further push her into the 'abyss' so to speak.

That all said, in your case Oz.  With the way you speak and how much you worry about being the best parent you can be for your future child, I have a hard time envisioning you ever screwing it up nearly as much as they did.  Be kind but don't be a doormat, be firm but not too strict, be fair and hear all sides of the story when there's conflict.  That's the best you can do for your child.  If you parent anything like how you approach these reddit posts, I think you'll do just fine.

Kids don't need you to be perfect.  They need you to be parents.

2nd story. Make a donation to the church of scientology in his name with his phone and address.  They will NEVER leave him alone about it. Learned that from Mark Rober.

After living in Argentina for 3.5 months and Spain for so far 2 months, I've noticed that a lot of native Spanish speakers say their English isn't good. Buddy, your English is better than some Americans I know, you're fine

"Is it possible to fix people like this?"  It is possible, yes, though it is difficult because most people with that condition are internally terrified of confronting the idea that they may have flaws. Proper treatment does exist- It's kind of the equivalent of taking someone from the culture they grew up in, then sending them to a culture across the world and trying to teach them to inhabit that culture: All the little unconscious forms of interaction like how close you stand when talking, appropriate eye contact, gestures, etc. need to be retrained, because the fundamental issue is that the person has been raised with a completely warped idea of human interaction.  It does work if the person is willing to do the work for it.

for anyone curious: "repudiate: refuse to accept or be associated with." "Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the study, treatment, diagnosis, and prevention of cancer." (so i'm assuming a native english speaker would probably say 'cancer-ridden' or something)

The patient story: not as serious (thank GOD), but when I was working at a grocery store, I had a woman who looked like a walking ghost trying to stumble up to the checkout. So pale I could see her veins, it was terrifying, I've never seen someone look like that before or since.

I went over to offer her help, a chair, to call someone, anything, because I honestly believed she was about to die right there. As soon as I uttered the words "miss, can I help-" she dropped like a rock, I barely caught her head. Full blackout, I thought I was holding a dead person.

While I'm screaming at my coworker to call 911 and trying to check her pulse, up walks some random lady that I can't even describe, I didn't bother looking at her in the moment, who started trying to ask me where to find something. I am holding a limp body of a woman, on the floor, shouting for 911, mildly panicking that I would need to start CPR, and someone thought that was the best time to ask me where the condiments were!

Lady was fine, she woke up after maybe 30 seconds (which felt like years to 19-year-old me lol), turns out she was early in pregnancy and hadn't eaten anything that day. EMT took her to the hospital and that was that.

But, yes, some people do not give a sh*t about the situation around them, they only care about their own little world and what everyone is supposed to do for them.

Hit and Run: ALWAYS GET A CT SCAN. I hit a car running a red light (she was high on meth) and I totaled my car. I WENT BACK TO WORK.

I’m disabled now. Because I suffered a TBI that is worsening. I should’ve listened to my EMS friend.

So for OP, go to a neuropsychiatrist and get tested. If you can prove the percent of cognitive damage you can take them to small claims. They don’t show up you win by default. You can then send a “bounty hunter” after them. You can also get some disability AND help to make sure you don’t get like me.

Please always get a CT in accidents. PLEASE.

I grew up in a family of alcoholics, so I know that a 3rd DUI usually means license suspension and/or actual significant jail time. I think that drunk driver knew that which is why he sped off.

For the Cousin saga, specifically Oz's concerns about being a bad parent and permanently fucking up your child.

As someone who grew up in an unstable home but now has a much better relationship with their parents. You can tell the difference between your parents doing the best they can vs intentional abuse and neglect.

As for Mia, again speaking for myself, the only way she'll change is if she wants to change. I've changed so much in the past decade, granted my issues are WAY different then hers. But people can change, they can heal. But it's also not OPs job to fix them or even accept them back into their life if Mia does get better.

I hope I'm making sense lol

I never doubt some crazy shit people will say. I had an older coworker grab a necklace I was actively wearing and ask me where I got it. I told him it belonged to my dead father and he responded with “your father would want me to have it”. I was shocked at first but thankfully responded with “if my dad was alive, he’d break your hand for this.” He laughed it off but it stuck with me because it was such a weird and disrespectful thing to say.

"YOU'RE RUINING MY WHOLE DAY BY NOT HAVING THE RIGHT KIND OF VANILLA SYRUP"

Yea, thats because the overworked baristas in Starbucks personally hate you and replaced all the vanilla syrup with the kind you specifically hate to make your life a living hell.

Thats definitely what's going on.

"It's very rude that you were on the phone when we walked in."

I think we've actually found the most entitled person: the one who thinks you need to be off the phone at all times because they might walk through the door. Insane.

1:31 Not a myth! I work in civil litigation and slip and falls at grocery stores and restaurants are our bread and butter. Most of them settle before they reach trial based on how negligent and how badly hurt the Plaintiff is. Her rudeness may be brought up in deposition and that may be embarrassing for the Karen, but ultimately has no bearing on the outcome.

Sadly, I do believe the clinic story. I'm also a receptionist and have had to call our emergency line when patients pass out in the waiting room or trip. Most patients stay out of the way and show genuine concern, but every now and then we get someone bitching about how it held up the line or get mad at me for "ignoring them" while I was on the phone paging for med staff. We are a decent sized clinic so all med staff are behind locked doors and we have to call them during an emergency, and we have to stay with the patient until someone arrives.

The two hours late while demanding to be seen is also common. I've had patients show up the next day and get pissed when they found out their doctor is not even there.

Funeral director here... sadly, that sort of attitude isn't uncommon.

I've had family start fist fights during arrangement conferences (that's when the family comes in to pick out the casket, music, schedule everything, hand over clothes & make up, etc) bc they left one family member behind to guard the house, & other family members who didn't know the house was being guarded showed up to strip the place while their 'representative' was at the conference. Heard it all go down over the phone so there was a fist fight in the casket room & a simultaneous fist fight being heard over the phone. Cops were called to both locations.

I've also over heard family members coaching friends on where the hide a key was & what to take in the middle of the wake. More than once. Those times I found someone who wasn't immediate family, pulled them aside, & quietly let them know that maybe they should send someone to the house to 'check on things'. That resulted in police response as well.

Every funeral home I've worked for has a closet full of unclaimed ashes, some going back decades. We can't scatter them. Some funeral homes pay for a mausoleum to store the boxes in, so if family does show up, the ashes are retrievable. The ashes that were interred were a mix of inability to pay, no one left to take the ashes, & no one wanting them.

I've seen the worst of people at funerals & it almost always involves money & entitlement.
