This video was made in, and uses details from, Minecraft version 26.2. However, 26.3 is adding the Poplar Trees! This gives us:
- 1 new Tree if counting by sapling type (Total of 11, up from 10)
- 3 new Trees if counting by practical visual appearance, one for each color of leaves they can have (Total of 20, up from 17)
- 6 new Trees if counting by distinct feature files, one for each of the leaf colors, plus another for each of those that includes Leaf Litter decorators (Total of 45, up from 39)

Additionally, all 6 Poplar Tree features have a trunk height range of between 7-11, a number of branches between 1-4, a Foliage radius of between 5-8 (Not evenly distributed, but this isn't important for the purposes of counting distinct trees), and a Foliage height of either 5 or 6. Extrapolating this across all 6 of the features, this adds 960 new Trees to our final count(s), meaning we have either 1481 distinct Trees if we don't consider Mangrove branch configurations, or 2736 if we do!

Poplar Trees are extremely cool, and they're just the start of the huge worldgen changes and additions that have come with 26.3, so keep an eye out for my update video coming soon!

0:12 uhhh, i think the number is about 521. Idk why, just felt like it

0:13 making my guess now; according to the thumbnail, about 512...

Can't blame you not counting every possible permutation of decorators and leaf placements considering it'd easily multiply the possible forms of each tree type by thousands to millions and more, but it would have been funny for the final count to be some unimaginable 2^135 type number haha

I calculated the possible mangrove variants and they are:
Small Mangrove: 28,429,701,216
Tall Mangrove: 2.86210307E29 or 2.86210307*10^29
Total: 2.86210307E29 or 2.86210307*10^29

Funnily enough there are so many tall mangrove variants that the small mangrove variants don't make a real difference.

is this what irl botanists do for a job

There's at least 1 (more or less)

Can't wait for "I collected EVERY TREE in HARDCORE MINECRAFT!!!!!!"

I was thinking about this throughout the video, and I see why it wouldn’t count, but I’d still like to see it mentioned. The tress that generate inside structures are different. The village has a central tree, the woodland mansion has a small dark oak, and the trial chambers have tiny versions of all trees (and I’m missing some im sure)

Hell yeah bro let's classify some flora

Not even gonna lie this felt like a Minecraft botany class and am incorporating it into my world’s lore

the jan misali approach of "I promise it's interesting" in the thumbnail continues to spread (this is a cool video idea)

Gotta be at least 6

2:24 Fun fact, bamboo is more closely related to oak trees than oak trees are to spruce trees.

Tree is also just a label for how a plant looks, which is why palm trees are still considered trees, even though they are a type of grass. It doesn't mean anything evolutionarily.

I thought this would be about how many trees there are in a single minecraft world (estimation, on average)
This is good too!

would be a fun challenge for survival to acquire every single tree type

The total number of possible trees is 286,210,306,810,197,125,280,046,747,097 (or 286 octillion). I'll explain a bit here:

Each trunk block on a mangrove has either no branch or a branch made of 1-4 steps (regular) or 1-6 steps (tall), each step independently 1 or 2 blocks long. Therefore, there are 30 possible branch shapes for regular mangrove and 126 for tall mangrove

If every trunk block independently gets no branch or a specific shape, that's S+1 choices per block (where S = number of shapes) so a trunk of height h has (S+1)^h total configurations. One of those is no branch anywhere which you counted back when you tallied every possible trunk height, so the new trees per height is (S+1)^h-1

Testing that model against the formula you worked out, the 2 block regular mangrove trunk, with 31 choices per block, two blocks, is 31^2 which = 961, minus the 1 plain trunk = 960, which matches

From there, it's just summing up the height ranges: regular being 2-7 (31^2 through 31^7), tall mangrove being 4-14 (127^4 through 127^14), and did the arithmetic in Python sandbox, since a normal calculator can't go that high precisely

That gave me that a regular mangrove has 28,429,701,210 new trees, with tall mangroves having a whopping total of 286,210,306,810,197,125,251,617,045,366 new trees. (almost all of it comes from the tall end of the height range, with height 14 giving a 30-digit number alone)

Adding that to the previous total of 521 and you get a grand total of 286,210,306,810,197,125,280,046,747,097 unique trees.

I hope this number is correct, and I think it is, however one thing I couldn't figure out is how you said a 3 block regular trunk has 83,000,788 variants, while my formula only gives 29,790 (31^3 -1). All of the other numbers are correct, so I'm unsure how you got that number

7:45 reminds me of when I was learning about phenotype vs genotype

Perhaps the varieties of trees are really only limited by our imagination

2:22 Fun fact, there is no restrictive botanical definition of a tree. If it's a big ass plant, it's a tree.
