I love these - new people encountering the giant majesty of Bruce in his prime. 'Damn' is indeed the word.

I feel so fortunate to have been alive to witness Bruce for his entire career! He has been the Walt  Whitman of my life.

He puts on 4 solid hours of the most amazing musical performance you've ever seen. Stunningly emotional... a thrill ride.

"Is a dream a lie if it don't come true or is it something worse?" - in my opinion one the best lines ever written. The song is based on the life of Bruce's one year younger sister Virgina and his brother-in-law Mickey. She became pregnant at a very young age, they got married and living their parent's life in New Jersey. The difference to the young couple in the song is, they are still together to this day 😊 If you wanna dig deeper into Bruce I would start with the album "Born To Run", then "Darkness On The Edge Of Town", followed by "The River". Next I would go back to his first two albums "Greetings From Asbury Park" and "The Wild, The Innocent And The E Street Shuffle" before I would go ahead with "Nebraska", "Born In The USA" and everything what follows.

Re: lyrics, this is a true story about Bruce’s sister and brother-in-law. She got pregnant, they had to marry very young. His brother-in-law told Bruce about languishing in the 80s economy (which would NOT improve for American blue collar workers). The happy news is they are still married…but this song always feels like a ghost story to me.

He actually wrote this song about his sister and brother in law, and this album had just come out. So he hadn't performed it a million times yet. I think that's why he was so emotional singing it.

"Now I just act like I don't remember
And Mary acts like she don't care" allways make me cry...cheers from Uruguay!!!

he is that good, hope you get to explore more 💚💚✌🏼✌🏼

This song is about how real life shatters dreams.

He’s been my favorite for over 50 years!
So glad to see someone new discover the genius that is Bruce!

One of the greatest songs ever. The Boss.

Oh boy, you’in for a great ride if you haven’t heard more Bruce songs. Keep’em coming.

One of the greatest lyricists of all time.To me he is a modern day Shakespeare. Listen to Born in the USA, Jungleland, Thunder Road, The Ghost of Tom Joad, American Skin (41 Shots), Streets of Philadelphia, even a bop like Dancing in the Dark has amazing lyrics. These are just a few. There are hundreds of songs by Bruce that are a master class in song writing.

It does mean something to him, but you’ll find everything means something to Bruce. Happy or sad, nobody is more intense than Bruce Springsteen. The Boss.

And that's why he's the Boss.

the reaction most of us got when we first heard Bruce, then this song, then when we understood it and now thinking about my own adventures (luckily no mishaps) down by the river and it was about the same time this video was recorded 1980  - - so glad this young man has found the Boss  - enjoy the beauty & power of Bruce

This Song is a Masterpice!!!!!!Bruce ❤❤❤

Enjoyed your reaction.  You are very lucky if you continue to explore Bruce.  Extremely versatile if you dig deep.

NOT A STUDIO VERSION!!  BUT, catch the (audio only) LIVE version of this on the mega-album "Live, 1975-1985".  First, he shares a personal story that will affect you deeply.  Then, he sings this to perfection.  I usually shed tears. That album 'should' be your source for many of his best cuts: after all, he picked them personally to represent those ten years, and I think he knows when he's hit it.

Soooooo good. And the movie made me cry. Masterpiece.
