In today's video, I'll explain everything you need to know about complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD). Starting with a brief history and continuing through to the key diagnostic criteria, we'll cover it all. We'll also look at potential triggers, such as violence and abuse during childhood. While the recognition of CPTSD as an official diagnosis was a long and difficult process, as a psychotherapist, I'm all the more pleased that those affected can now officially receive treatment and thus adequately process their trauma. The main difference between PTSD and CPTSD is that PTSD is triggered by a single key event, which can be sufficient to lead to this diagnosis. CPTSD, on the other hand, often involves multiple severe and impactful experiences that lead to impairments in a person's thinking or feelings over a long period.
