What is it like to ride with one of America’s busiest fire stations?

I spent the day with Wichita Fire Department Station 1 in downtown Wichita, Kansas, riding with the firefighters of Truck 1 as they responded to emergency calls across the city.

At the time of this ride-along, Firehouse Magazine’s 2021 National Run Survey ranked Wichita Station 1 as the second-busiest fire station among participating departments in the United States, with five units combining for 28,755 runs during the year.

But the numbers only tell part of the story.

Come along with Truck 1 for a behind-the-scenes look at life inside this busy downtown firehouse, from time with the crew at the station to responding on the streets of Wichita. During the ride-along, we get an up-close look at the firefighters, apparatus and real emergency calls that make Station 1 such an interesting place to spend a shift.

There are no staged demonstrations or scripted scenes—just an authentic look at what happens when you spend the day riding with a working truck company.
