I have DVDs from 1998, 1999, that still play with no issues. Disc rot is the most overblown topic in the physical media community. Its exceedingly rare. Just store your discs well and treat them well and you'll be fine.
If you stumble upon one that won't play randomly, it could just be faulty manufacturing.

3:20 the issue if its never been played in years is that we don't know if its already unplayable since you bought it, or it became unplayable over time. it is possible that the disc is defective straight from the factory, but since its never been tested, its impossible to tell right away.

This is why it is important to back up your discs digitally. There are a number of great tools and resources out there to covert your physical collection to a digital one. So long as every company keeps moving towards this "you'll own nothing and be happy" rental world, I think it is our duty as collectors and consumers to ensure that our collections don't rot away with the discs they were printed on.

The Possibility of finding discs faults is one of the reasons that of late that I am inclined to hold onto a small number of Doubled up discs collections i have rather than going through the process of trying to sell or trade and only getting a small amount for the effort.

I’ve bought more than 3000 physical media. Never had a problem with DVD or 4K. But with bluray, I had 4 or 5 but in my country, those titles like Iron Man are known for…

What i usually Collect is Upgraded versions of my Favorite movies. So I never really worry abput them not working anymore because I trade them in for cash anyways. Especially Discs from early 2007-2010! Speed Racer is one of them and the 4K comes out in 2 weeks!

This channel is good at Phill dealing with a psychological /OCD problem, and the comments show he's not alone.

"These discs are poor quality and can fail, so I keep multiple copies.".

I watched (for the first time) The northman yesteday.
I was so happy to see you on screen.
I was wondering how's Anja Taylor-Joy behind the scenes?
(I'm a huge fan since Last Night in Soho and obviously Furiosa.)

Oh and your death was quite funny btw 😄

As soon as i saw the German rating logo on the Gangs Of New York keep case, i got immediate bad memories of 15 years back. It is said that Blu-Ray discs by certain German labels manufactured between 2008 and 2012 are susceptible to disc rot. And i can attest to this. I had a handful of German Universal Blu-Rays of that time frame that didn't work right of the gate. Amongst those were Scarface, Dawn Of The Dead (2004), Sleepers, Wanted, Scent Of A Woman, etc. And those copies that i owned didn't work since day one. They would play normal at first but then they started skipping all over the place.

Been buying CDs, VHSs, PC games and DVDs since the early 90's. Only got the music, the games and the films i actually watched, played and enjoyed, not some random sporadic urge to get a certain film just for the sake of collecting! Around 3500 DVD/Blus, ~ 400 VHS, 230 music CDs and cassettes, 310 PC games, ~ 100 LaserDiscs....Shop smart and you will cherish and protect your collection more....Only the movies you like, not some trending, viral whim!...Not a single rotten disc. Believe my first ever CD was Judgment Night's OST in 1993 - still plays like the day 1! A Time to Kill DVD snapper case - my first ever DVD from back in 1997 - still plays as the first day.

Disc rot are one of the reasons why I am upgrading my collection from DVDs to Blu-rays even though it’s not a big deal, I am only upgrading the ones that I have, I am going to have to take a look at my anime DVD collection to see if they are alright.

No rot here Phill, I take my discs for regular walks, feed them flintstones vitamins, and organic food only. I imagine as damp as the UK is this is tougher, but in much of the US rain is really quite rare.

Disk rot was a problem for awhile with LaserDisc. The water applied to the aluminum surface was supposed to be distilled but for months, most titles from a particular plant were not. The aluminum surface deteriorated due to the contamination. It was a fight to get the industry to own up to the problem but eventually, titles were replaced at no cost.

@SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion 5 months ago

Laserdiscs were infamous for disc rot, certain ones like MCA DiscoVision at the top of the list.

Out of the 800 CD albums, 500 or so dvd/BR/4k movies and 80 odd TV shows/documentaries on dvd/BR/4k I have in my collection. I've also picked up countless stuff from charity shops over the years and I've only encountered 1 disc rot problem.

I guess the other 150 unwatched movies you have I bet will have no issues.
Unless you had them all in a damp loft for 10+ years.
