nice mention of putting the buff over the hoodie, i do that for biking sometimes. another trick to keep it disappearing is to pull the back of it up high enough that it's under the helmet - keeps the ears warm and if i pull it down in front, it never goes too far because the back is keeping it up

Really great advice. Love the buff advice!

Great advice, thanks

Great video and agree with pretty much all of it. I would add Brunei mesh as the baselayer. I also like a liner glove and wrist gaiters. No mention of socks - I like a liner sock there too but mostly to stop all the tape I preemptively put on my heels sticking to my merino socks…outeru have some good ideas for keeping your nose and face warm

For a lot of my winter climbing career I used a Buffalo in combination with Paramo waterproofs, one of the reasons I don't still use it as much as I did is that winter just isn't as cold as it used to be. Cold and clear day then start with Buffalo and Ronhills, add Paramo suit before climbing, wet start from car then base layer with Paramo, at some stage put Buffalo on under paramo jacket once above freezing level. You dry out quicker than you can get wet. Thanks for the video !

Looks amazing 😊

Have you ever experimented with fishnet base layers? (Aclima,brynje etc..) I will never go back! Surprisingly super warm but just never seems to get wet from sweat, amazing!

This video is great. I go for rab polartec leggings and then ME lhotes waterproof trousers (i seem to be the only person who finds the tupilak trousers dig in around the waist when stepping high or sitting down - i went for a medium and am pretty skinny but never heard anyone else had this problem). I then go for eclipse fleece with either ME switch pro or old rab shadow fleece followed by ME tupilak on top. On the glove front i know youre a shop so you cant say it but a few pairs of chamonix bin man gloves and a pair of showa temres is probably the best and cheapest option. Ive got a ME citadel and i feel the same way about it - great jacket but its massive. I also tried the ME aerotherm, ME echo and ive got a arcteryx atom but found them really sweaty. Good old fleece is still the best when it comes to scotland i think.

Nice video, great level of detail throughout.
That said, I’ve always thought the Gore-Tex hype is a bit overblown. “Waterproof and breathable” at the same time just isn’t really true in practice, it’s one or the other depending on conditions. The manufacturers know this, but the marketing keeps pushing the idea anyway. End result is people paying £500 for a jacket that, functionally, isn’t doing much more than a £50 one.

Have you ever thought of contacting Temres and asking them if they will do a collab and instead of having the Temres 282 industrial style logo you could ask for some cool looking graphics that spell Outside or something more asthetically pleasing. Out of all the winter gloves , specifically gloves and not mitts Temres have been the best discovery i have made by far and they are very affordable although not the most robust but still robust enough for seasonal use and they actually dry out effectively by wearing a thin liner glove towards the end of the day.

Brynje base layers are pretty amazing for not getting wet and clammy. It would be cool (no pun intended) if you guys could stock those, they seem hard to get hold of in the UK.

@stephenbarby7234 8 months ago

I follow the philosophy of trying to never get hot and sweaty. So I brynje layer plus ME shroud fleece work really well for venting heat and breathability while being warm when zipped up. I would only add a third layer, a shell, in high winds or rain. Which aren't unusual. But I think the video advice could leave a lot of people too hot, followed by very chilled once you are standing still and soaking wet.

Ive never heard of anyone complain of warm forearms before 😂

When you talk about Scottish winter climbing and Ben Nevis is the film footage being shown not of Great Gable in the English Lake District? 😉

I've spent far too much time & money trying to figure this out. I run quite hot.

Top:
Base: Rho LT hoodie
Mid: OMM Core+ Hoody / Proton SL hoodie
Shell: Tupilak Jacket (can't beat the slim fit on this jacket)
Belay: Oreus / Nuclei SV

Bottom:
Base: Switch Pants (a bit on the warm side)
Shell: Tupilak Pants

Gloves: I found the oppsite with gloves. sizing tight they seem to have stretched a bit and my dexterity is better.
Basic fleece gloves
ME Serac gauntlet
ME Direct glove
Hestra expedition mitts

Does a well layer system work for 8000m because I don't like the simplicity of 8000m down suit as it can't be enough managed

@Eddie1711C 8 months ago

Are there any belay jackets that are youd reccomend as multi-purpose/not too warm for being a year round cold weather jacket? I’m wondering if there’s something that works for long, cold belays and more everyday use (spring/autumn, shade, chucking it on for a cold walk)?
Or do you recken it would be better to buy cheaper, knowing Id keep it as a dedicated “horrible belays only” sort of thing?
