This is great! Would love to see a video on winter mountaineering clothing. It would be substantially different when your starting temp is already 0.

Excellent tutorial on layers - for Alpine conditions. I use my Arcteryx shell a lot more in the Brecons... Same principles apply though. Always enjoy your videos.

No mention of sun hoodys, they're the modern baselayer for the mountains.

This is absolute gold, a much more detailed improvement based on what's already on your website.
Massive thanks!

We're climbing with you on early June, so we're taking notes.

Thank you for the nice content 🎉 One thing I realized as a beginner is that Decathlon is a no brainer. Saves search time and gives peace of mind.

Very helpful.  When I walked  the Haute Route I tended to wear a baselayer and a Rab windproof/softshell over it (borealis).   When I stopped I put on a pertex, polartec alpha smock and or a light down jacket depending on temperature.

Much truth here. I do add a base layer to my legs in winter and carry some sort of heavier puffer layer. GoreTex? I love it and it  has saved my hide a few times. I always have at least a goretex parka along.. BTW, the original stuff in the late 70s was a lot more breathable, but various regulations caused it to be reformulated and less breathable.

Thanks.

Really useful vid. Thanks John. Can you do a short vid covering fuel & hydration for MB? Coming with MBG in June btw so this is all v helpful content.

👍👍👍 great advice 😊.
I don't climb mountains of note .. age 75 with wrecked knees have put paid to that.
I do however, Nordic Walk year-round to stay in shape and love 'Wandering' through my local Swiss Forests.
What you say reinforces my understanding of 'layering' .. and multiple thin layers thereof, worn and removed as and when required. I belong to the 'Be Bold Start Cold' fraternity 😊.
Besides a Trail Running Belt with Pouches packed with 'stuff', my go-to is a Sea to Summit 22 litre Ultra-Sil Dry Day Pack that serves perfectly for the on/off layers, 'emergency poncho mylar sheet/etc kit', water and snacks AND a spare set of dry upper body clothing and socks.
Keeping costs down? Zip Loc Bags, 17 and 35 litre waste bin bags (the Swiss ones are especially robust) serve well keeping everything ordered and dry.
'Gore Tex' and the equivalents. I agree with you. If not standing still and doing almost nothing, weather dependent, one WILL get wet from inside and/or the outside.
In dry cold, a down jacket goes with, in the pack, and only used when not active for extended periods such as waiting at bus stops and on train platforms in order to get to and from  my outing departure / end points.
I like to wear my Down Jacket as close to the base / under layers as possible .. believing it to be the most efficient insulation and thus best used where it can create the optimal micro-climate up against the skin where it is needed.
Thanks for sharing. I sure that those who take heed will benefit by it.
Take care ..

Very good info. Great video. Thanks. I’ve thrown my GoreTex out. If I am in rain, I wear silicone-nylon rain jacket and pants. The jacket has pit zips and I don’t really have anymore condensation than with the GoreTex. If there is no rain, I have my lightweight, very breathable wind jacket.  In my experience, GoreTex is no better than an impermeable silnylon rain jacket.

I still think hardshell is the hardest to understand. What about durability and water proof level for the hardshell? The one you had seem very fragile, maybe not even full water proof? Does it change if you are away many days?

Thanks for the video   i have problem finding right  kit for Mountain treck  olwase small size    not for tall people

good and useful video. Thanks :) I wonder what extra clothes you carry in your backpack for emergency situations, like weather getting worse and being forced to spend a night in very bad conditiions on the mountain. Because, all these layers with a very thin gore tex and a softshell pants will be not enough to survive...

Merino next to the skin gets very wet and stays wet if you sweat much- it’s only good for going for coffee in a cold climate, not for any vigorous exercise. Polypropylene wicks and stays dry but can smell after a while.

Marinade yourself :)
