Fighting on Legos would have been hilarious.

I think you all kind of underestimated the complex knee injury waiting to happen that is fighting on wet grass.

Can confirm, this hurt 👍

So today we learned that Seth is a dirty wrist locker.

So proud of you Seth.

Excellent video.

I'm a BJJ black belt, over a 15 years in the art/sport. This is an important watch for grapplers because context changes things, and (grabs walker) back in my day, really well before that in the 90s there was not set rule set and bjj guys who wanted to compete had to be, pun intended, all terrian grapplers able to go into a No Holds Barred (MMA) match, an ADCC match, a judo tournament and find a way to win. As a result they would be very quick to assess and adapt to different situations and preparation for competition wasn't an overly specific thing.

Today the competition side is dominated by a 2-3 rule sets. The IBJJF rule set leaves space for a lot of different games but some of them are very specific to grappling on mats and in the IBJJF ruleset.

I have been coached by and now coach people who have been or are in Law Enforcement, security, or the military. And my general advice for people who want to train with an eye towards real world application while at a gym is pretty simple:

1. Takedowns are essential, make sure to spend time on your feet. And wrestle ups aren't stand up, they are easier and can leave you feeling like you can wrestle but you skip all the hard work of hand fighting and entries.

2. Train primarily in gi but look for no gi grips. You need to know how to deal with people grabbing shirts, jackets or your belt but don't want to rely on them being there for you.

3. Your bottom game needs a sense of urgency to it. Guard is about the 3 S's: stand up, sweep, or submit.

This video did a great job demonstrating how much your context changes what you can and should do.

So before the self defense bros show up to tell you how this is an argument against grappling, this is exactly why you need grappling, so you DONT end up on the concrete.

On a pebble beach, we turn to conversational Jujitsu.

I saw a guy trying to practice Muay Thai on the beach and every time someone throws a kick it launches a cloud of sand into the opponents eyes.  It actually stops the fight rather quickly.

What BJJ is to Sensei Seth: Submissions, not doing takedowns, guard pulling, shrimping, and win by rulebook technicality.
Sounds like he has a sound grasp of the basic fundamentals of BJJ. Someone get this man a blue belt.

Just imagine how different each of these scenarios would go if they actually wanted to hurt each other. 😬

"Get on top, stay on top" is a completely valid and normal jiu jitsu strategy.  It's even better on bad surfaces.

I think in an actual fight you're not worried about the opponents safety or yours. I can attest to that because I fought in prison. I put a guy in a standing guillotine after we scrapped. He tried to slam and tackle me into my bunk and then the bars. I choked him out till he turned purple. When he was on the ground it was the scariest time in my life. His body started convulsions and his stomach was extending in and out. I was lucky he came back to. The dude bruised my entire rib cage on my right side. Without those 2 yrs of training I wouldn't have known what to do, when to let go or executing it intuitively. Almost instinctively. Thats what's really important. Without years of training I dont think you unlock that instinct with techniques. So I recommend training no matter what. It can save your life and prevent future alterations. This guy was way bigger than me muscle wise. I earned his and everyones respect in the tank. No one pressed me after it. Side note the fight was over 2 owed ramen noodles after a football bet. He wanted to beat me up instead of paying up. Don't go to prison. Follow the law, train and be safe everyone!

Specifically: wet, finished concrete as opposed to dry, gravelly concrete

I wasn't prepared to see the sumo squat defense to crucifix

Seth bully maguire: im gonna put some dirt in your eye

Concrete, tile (like mall floors), things like that, there's a HUGE difference for takedowns and such. No surprise there, but it also needs to be considered that some of the takedowns you might be really good at and able to execute under pressure WILL be treated and prosecuted as lethal force if you use them in a self-defense scenario.

Seth illustrated a takedown/slam that he could have done, and I really appreciated that, because it made it that little bit more clear that you are stepping into the realm of life-altering/ending as soon as concrete/similar is in the picture.

You don't get up from a slam like that the same way you went down. You don't walk away from that unchanged... or maybe at all. I love playing jiu-jitsu, and I also love having my head-cannon sobered up now and again... because outside of the mats, it's really not a game.

"What does jiujitsu mean to you?"
"Not pulling guard."
That is the most beautifull answer I ever heard in my life.

Seth opened with "but I'm 260 bro"

Next up: Sumo with the dohyo encircled by cacti. Have a pair of tweezers handy, Sensei Seth! In all seriousness, I dig the concept of this video. Environment makes a huge difference in the execution of a ton of techniques, so putting them to the test like this is very interesting and entertaining.
