“I think it didn’t have enough women’s feet and kung fu”

It still blows my mind that There Will Be Blood and No Country For Old Men were released in the same year! Two absolute once in a generation modern masterpieces released at the same time!

Ok fine I'll watch There Will Be Blood again.

If you pay attention, you can hear the perfect mixture of admiration and hurt ego in his voice

We really got Javier Bardem,Daniel Day Lewis, and heath ledger god tier performances within 12 months

I think the Paul Dano casting choice is one of the things that makes this film work. His stature, his nervousness, and his frailty all contradict the inordinate power and sway he has over the community. Daniel kneels to nobody except Eli, who is the voice of the community, a position he has engineered through people's faith. It's a very good way of demonstrating that beast of capitalism is tall, violent, and bold, but other malicious forces (in this case the religious fundamentalism that governs the community) are small, strategic, and subtle.

One of the things that makes this movie so effective is the music.  It is more akin to horror movie music.  I didn’t even realize it until I rewatched it.  Such a good fucking movie.

Boogie Nights is amazing, but watching There Will Be Be Blood is a cinematic masterpiece.

In defense of Paul Dano, he wasn't originally cast to play the role of Eli Sunday. An actor by the name of Kel O'Neill was PTA's first choice, but he was fired after two weeks because "the dynamic wasn't working".

Paul, who was originally only cast as Paul Sunday, was asked to play both brothers, and the script was changed to make them identical twins. And, since filming had already begun Paul was given only four days to prepare.

So, to go up again Daniel Day Lewis, who'd probably already been in character for the last six months, on four days notice...Paul did an exceptional job. Tarantino picked up on something, but if he knew the back story, he probably wouldn't have been so critical.

Dano was a snake and a false prophet in every sense of the term and portrayed it absolutely masterfully. His performance was incredible and deserves much praise. If someone can't see that I feel like they've missed a core component and takeaway of the film itself.

i grew up in the central valley of california. worked in the oil fields for many years. when i heard the score my mind was blown because that sound is the sound you hear all the machines making when you’re out there. that rhythmic yet off beat clanking sound. 3 or 4 different sounds looping in different tempos in such a way that they’re together one moment and separate another. i feel like the composer HAD to have visited some oil leases before composing this score.

I watched this and No Country For Old Men no less than 20 times that year. My local cinema had $1 Tuesdays, and I would go catch either film after class. Truly, a great year for film.

The shot of Daniel and Little HW on the train is heartwarming and at the same time heartbreaking when you know how the movie progresses.

7:50 No one plays being murdered with a bowling pin like Paul Dano. He was born for that role.

I think the fact that Paul Dano literally got on Quentin's nerves to the point of callng him out in public, is testament to Paul being an incredibly effective villain.

Its so satisfying hearing great artists talk about how other great artists doing awesome things.

I loved Dano.  Really enjoy his work.

You also can't forget about Johnny Greenwood's soundtrack he composed for this film.

Paul Dano is absolutely stellar in this film. For such a young and fairly unknown (at the time) actor to go up against DLL takes a whole lot of guts. He plays the perfect balance of youthful confidence, fragility and naïvite. I think the acting performance reflects the hierarchy between the two actors and it works perfectly.
I Recently saw "gangs of New York" where DiCaprio plays against DLL, and the chemistry doesn't work nearly as well, and I think it's because Leo was already such an established star when he played that role.

This film and no country for old men were filmed at the same time right next to each other, to the point the smoke from there will be blood caused production on no country to stop. Arguably 2 of the top 10 movies of all time IMO

Paul Dano performance is excellent.
He is one of the best actors around.
DDL is in a league of his own, the 2 performances do not need to be compared
