Hay all, to those asking where to watch the show:

USA- Hulu
Aussie- Binge
International- Disney+

Accuracy notwithstanding, I’d like to offer up the humble opinion that Mr Inbetween is not only one of the finest pieces of television to come out of Australia, but one of the finest pieces of television I’ve seen, period.

the most realistic part of all though.....Gary putting up the watermelons and telling them to 'stay'..... everyone in Australia has been guilty of that XD

i always LOVED how sudden and abrupt the gunfights started and ended in mr inbetween. they werent these big drawn out choreographed plays. there wasnt over the top comms. there was no "RELOADING !!!" shouted out or anything. people fired their gun. people died. it was over. it was realistic. it really drove home just how dark it could get, how quickly life ended, how it wasnt glamorous. it just happened.

20:35 funnily enough the gun loadout scene in the white room was the only scene not filmed in australia, it had to be filmed in the US for the amount of guns required for the shot.

It is, seriously, one of the best shows of the last 20 years. There is nothing added that isnt needed, and could almost be a documentary. Incredible performances, tight scripting and its just about perfect.

I think the main reason Ray fired from the hip was to preserve his night vision. The Pratchett lacks a flash suppressor & firing through the sights would have definitely flash-blinded him for a few precious seconds.

Berettas are popular as movie guns because they can be readily adapted to blank fire without complicated gunsmithing.

thanks to u I binged all 3 seasons in 2 days and now I am depressed

8:19 a perfect plan that takes longer to develop will always be trumped by a flawed plan that is executed with intense violence of action

One of the best shows I’ve ever watched, I went in expecting nothing and received diamond.

As an American this show doesn’t get nearly enough hype

Edit: also, just to address your video you’ve done a great service here. Likening the sound design to Heat and pointing out what gun nuts like myself consider authentic portrayal really shows you’ve done your homework. Excellent work

Ray fires from the hip because that's how Aussie Diggers were taught to fire open bolt submachine guns. We were using the F1, essentially the Aussie Sterling, right into the 90's and if you were in the army up until about 1999, as Ray was, that's how you were taught to operate that style of weapon.
Edit: In my head canon Ray was a Sapper in what's now known as the Special Operations Engineer Regiment, but was the Incident Response Regiment in Rays day. It makes sense. The skill with IED’s and other explosives. The preference for shotguns and the skill with which he wields them. The preferred use of a shovel as a melee weapon. The speed with which he digs foxholes and how well they function.
Plus, there's a certain logic in Ray having been part of a unit few people know exists and whose primary role is to solve problems and clean up messes that no one else is able, or willing, to do.
Just my theory though, but if I'm right then I think that makes a Sapper like Ray killing those child traffickers with a shovel a deeply personal act. Particularly when Ray has access to a large amount of other kinds of weaponry.

He was working at night, at relatively close range.

Shoulder firing would have reduced his situational awareness by reducing his range of vision, increasing the effect on his hearing, and the muzzle flash messing with his vision.

Hip firing had good effect at that range, and let Ray be able to see and hear anything popping up unexpectedly.

The shot placement/burst placement in the ambush is also important. After the initial burst from the front against the van it swerves to the side, and Ray doesn't just "spray down" the side of the van like Hollywood would. He puts a controlled burst into the front door and the side door which is what a rational and calculated person would actually do. He knows there are people in the front seats of the van that he wants to make sure they're disabled, and it's possible there might be unharmed people sitting in the middle bench ready for a quick exit.

17:40 that reminds me of my dad who wasn't a smoker and I thought that washing hands and putting on some fragrance would be enough to cover up for my mischievous smoking

Another thing with the hipfire is that he is also shooting at night. If you are aiming down sight there could be a considerable flash that could work against you.

The fact that cars are shown to provide little to no cover (other than maybe the engine blocks) is a nice touch of realism - and an important safety message.

What’s this, a gun-fu video that ISN’T about John Wick??

My vibes are shooketh.

Having served in the army 1977-86 I can attest we were taught to fire the SMG from the hip, or instinctive position. This also had us training on the Sneaker Range where you walk a track and targets pop up randomly either side and you engage from the hip. At short (jungle) ranges it is effective, especially with an smg. We were also taught to use the middle finger to fire and have the index finger running along the body of the weapon as an aid in pointing and aiming. Ray's performance was tactically sound, in my humble opinion and also in the shotgun reload on the move scene.

As believable as the firearms scenes are, the real testament to the quality of the writing in this show is the fact that the most memorable scenes are ones in which there's no violence at all, like Ray and Bruce's visit to their childhood home, or Ray's dad telling him he wishes Ray could have known him before he went to war.

Another thing about Ray worth mentioning is that he considers himself a freelancer, because he wants to choose which jobs he takes, and which he passes on. He considers the targets of his contracts to be fair game because they've chosen to live in this world of violence. But when he learns one of his hits was actually innocent of the murder he was killed for, it really bothers him, unlike Freddy, whose attitude is to shrug it off as a simple mistake. But Ray surreptitiously gives the money he was paid to his victim's widow, because he doesn't feel right keeping it, and it's about the only thing he can do to compensate the dead man.

Another time he's offered a contract to kill a wealthy businessman/politician's ex girlfriend with the justification that she's extorting him for $2,000,000 or she'll go public and ruin his marriage and political career. Ray learns that she's pregnant, and was actually only asking for $1,000/month until her child turns 18. The guy arrives home to find Ray sitting in his walled garden, which Ray does deliberately to scare the shit out of him. Ray says he's bargained her down to $250,000 ($34,000 more than she'd actually asked for) and tells him to pay her in 48 hours. When he asks "what if I don't?", Ray gives him that terrifying smile of his and asks him in return, "do you really want to find out?".
