Apple pie was not invented in America, but rather in England, with the first recorded recipe appearing in 1381, European settlers brought apple trees and pie recipes to America in the 17th century. 😊

Traditionally Battenburg cake is wrapped in Marzipan and is glued together with Apricot Jam. Battenburg has been anglicised and you may of heard of the Name Mountbatten (Yes, part of Prince Philip's family were Battenburgs/Mountbattens). Apple pies were a British concept as well.

Bakewell Tarts are commercially available all around the UK in shops and supermarkets. And are manufactured outside of Bakewell in Derbyshire. But the Bakewell Pudding is a dessert that is only produced in Bakewell Derbyshire itself. There are three main shops that sell the Bakewell Puddings. All claiming to be the original, which originally was a mistake by a cook while making Jam Tarts somewhere between 1820 to 1860. Instead of stirring the eggs and almond paste mixture into the pastry, the cook spread it on top of the jam and baked it in the oven. Once cooked the mistake was quite apparent for all to see. But they were intrigued to see what the new concoction tasted like. And it became a surprise hit with customers at the local Inn. And so the humble Bakewell Pudding was born. However, if you want to try one for yourself. You'll either have to try and make your own version at home. Or you'll have to visit one of the three shops in the town of Bakewell to try it. 👍

Kipling use Bramley apples which is the favourite cooking apple used across the UK, available in all supermarkets, there's an interesting story behind Bramley apples too, due to how apple varieties are created we know exactly where the first ever Bramley apple tree was cultivated and it's still alive today, the tree grew from an apple pip planted by a young girl called Mary Ann Brailsford in Southwell, Notts in 1809. Basically if you plant apple pips the apple variety of the tree is completely random and not the same as the variety of the apple the pip came from, and can be a completely new variety never seen before, that's why the only way to grow apple trees of a specific variety if by grafting i.e. cutting branches off a tree of a known variety and grafting them onto another rootstock.

Derbyshire -> pronounced more like darbysheer.
Mince Pies -> NOT Mince 'Meat' Pies. We have them too & we still just call them Mince Pies.

First known recipe for apple pie was 800 years ago but we've been making pies for so much longer, in that time the pastry was used to preserve the food and wasn't eaten

@CHEEKYMONKEYWINS 7 months ago

i think you need to re-try the mince pie but have single cream, ice cream, clotted cream or custard with it... and warm the pie up.

I like how relaxed this video was! 🙂 Great to see Tiff standing unaided too. 💐
I think the saying should be "As American as Pecan Pie" because that really is distinctively American.

I live in Derbyshire and take me mum a few times a year to Bakewell. It's a beautiful market town, but has two shops that claim to sell the original Bakewell pudding... it is nothing like a Mr Kipling Bakewell tart, nice as they are, the puddings are so much better! EDIT - Tiffany's mum is the mother-in-law we all want!

@sos_legio_primus 7 months ago

The mum is correct. You heat the fruit pies up to the sugar melts and goes crispy served with soft serve vanilla icecream. Is a summer treat in the uk.
