I saw Ron race when he was 16 at the Lake Whitney AMA National in 1983. He holeshot and was GONE! Nobody behind him could even see him from turn to turn, including RJ, Omara and Barnett! Absolutely the most talented racer of that era.
Met Ron when I was in the Air Force in 1985 when a friend of mine introduced me to him at his home in I believe El Cajon. Brooks Dunlap was his name, and his son Kenny rode with him. Ron was a cool dude and one of the best riders in the world.
Great interview! Takes me back man! Those were some great times in the 80s. I raced moto and AFM road racing at 16 on a 100 gp bike forging my parents consent forms, traveling all over!
Back when racers were do or die. Younger generations can not really fathom the freedom and fun factor of the 80's. No cells or devices.. no internet..just ripping all day and partying all night. Looking out for each other.
