Im my late teens (I am74 now!) I studied archaeology and dug with TCM Brewster who was one of the pioneers of using cropmarks, and used to charter a light aircraft from local flying clubs, usually at the time of year when crops are just emerging. His assertion was that “there is more un-dug and unrecorded archaeology in East Yorkshire than any other county in Britain.”

I don’t know why is this so pleasing to watch… but it’s strangely compellingly. 🙏

Anyone interested in such fascinating historical evidence can look up the 100 000 stone circles in South Africa. Many are shaped like a flower with petals and a stalk with no openings . Some are so old and stand as remnants of previous ones with new ones overlapping them. We have no clue who made them and what purpose they served but they are truly ancient. Thanks to the few who observed and photographed them from the sky. One cannot visibly notice them from the ground without any former knowledge.
Thanks Adam for the spectacular demonstrations of times gone by.

You have Time Team to thank for the interest in crop marks. They are the ones who introduced the public to the potential value they have to archaeology.

I used Google Earth years ago to look at my own farm. Ancient field boundaries, showing how those big fields used to be many small ones. A real piece of history.

I will never get tired of looking at crop marks, the ghosts of the past! More more

Would be interesting to see these crop marks next to lidar of the same spots.

Another lidar addict here - so many crop marks this year! Back in 1976 'they' found a Roman Villa at my Dad's - hence my interest I suspect, however, the older marks the better - our little island has always been a busy (& desirable) place

I never searched for crop marks, but got your video recommended day after day.

To us rank amateur unwashed, Crop Marks are much much easier to see and understand their place in the landscape than a hole in the ground ever will be.

5:20 Entrances not aligning, was sometimes a defensive measure. Invaders having to turn sideways, would at some point, expose their unshielded side, to appropriately placed defenders. In Roman fortifications, they were called, clavicula.

Ah, my chance to shine: as a linguist I can assure you that 'Labourer' does not come from "lay brother." Through French, it comes from the Latin and means, well to strive or work.
Perhaps it was a joke, but I wanted to show off that I know things too!
Lay as in non-clerical comes from laicus (Latin) via the Greek Laikus, meaning of the people.

I think what you learn from this is that the surface of the England, at least the bits that are accessible, is a palimpsest of human occupation, their structures, and their remnants. One must assume that the whole of Europe is a similar writing, and over-writing, of human history. Then you get to Africa, whence we came. And so on...
Fascinating!
Thanks Adam!

14:14 Adam, this was outstanding citizen archeology. The ladder settlement in the last segment, is MASSIVE, they seem to run from Wisbech in the East all the way to Spalding in the North-West. It reminds me of the settlement referenced by Francis Pryor in his series Britain AD at West Heslerton in the Vale of Pickering.
