Five artists built private worlds so complete that their paintings seem to close around them.

Binge Watch No. 4 is a compilation of five previously released Shoot The Moon documentaries, brought together around obsession, isolation, private symbolism and artists who repeatedly returned to the same enclosed imaginative territory.

Fernand Khnopff painted his sister’s face until it became an unreachable symbol. Evelyn De Morgan filled allegorical worlds with imprisoned women, warnings and spiritual conflict. Vilhelm Hammershøi turned quiet Copenhagen rooms and his wife’s averted figure into unsettling studies of distance. Witold Wojtkiewicz transformed childhood into a melancholy theatre of solemn children, toy horses and disturbing clowns. Albert Pinkham Ryder worked and reworked his dark visions until some of the paintings physically began to collapse.

These are five artists who did not merely develop recognisable styles. They created worlds with their own rules, inhabitants and atmosphere, then kept returning to them.
