For more than a century, one family quietly built an art empire unlike anything the market had ever seen.

The Wildensteins bought, stored, authenticated, and sold some of the most valuable paintings in the world — Monet, Renoir, Manet, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Old Masters and thousands more. By one expert estimate, their hidden holdings may have reached around 10,000 works, spread across vaults in Paris, New York, London, Tokyo, Buenos Aires and Swiss freeports. At the same time, their catalogues helped determine which paintings the market would accept as genuine — decisions that could make or erase millions of dollars in value.

Their secrecy was not accidental. It was a family strategy. Daniel Wildenstein described discretion as something elevated almost to silence, while the business built enormous power by holding masterpieces for decades and revealing as little as possible about what it actually owned.

Then the system began to crack.

French police entered the basement of the family’s Paris mansion and found hundreds of artworks stored without a complete inventory. Around thirty pieces were removed by investigators, including works that had previously been reported missing or stolen. Some had connections to Jewish families whose collections were looted during the Second World War.

But this documentary is not only about a secret vault.

It is the story of how one dynasty became both a dominant force in the art market and one of its most powerful arbiters of authenticity; how hidden inventories, private trusts, freeports, inheritance disputes and decades-old missing artworks became entangled; and how two women inside the family eventually forced parts of the empire into the open.

From Nazi-era provenance battles and missing Manets to offshore trusts, billion-dollar collections, secret warehouses and a widow who had lived beside one of the richest art dealers in the world without ever seeing a bank statement, this is the story of the most secretive art empire in history.
