Prospect (2018) is a science fiction drama directed by Zeek Earl and Chris Caldwell, starring Sophie Thatcher, Jay Duplass, and Pedro Pascal. Set on a distant, toxic alien moon, the story follows a teenage girl named Cee who travels with her father to mine valuable organic gems hidden in the planet’s forests. Their mission goes wrong when they encounter hostile prospectors, leaving Cee stranded and forced to form an uneasy alliance with Ezra, a morally ambiguous drifter trying to survive long enough to escape the moon.
The film explores themes of survival, trust, greed, and coming of age in a hostile frontier environment. Cee must quickly mature as she navigates danger, betrayal, and loss, learning how to read people as carefully as she reads the alien world around her. Ezra, unpredictable and damaged, becomes both a protector and a threat, creating constant tension as the two struggle to stay alive amid limited oxygen, deadly terrain, and human violence.
Prospect was praised for its grounded approach to science fiction, emphasizing atmosphere, character, and world-building over spectacle. Its retro-futuristic technology, naturalistic dialogue, and immersive production design drew comparisons to classic frontier stories and hard sci-fi films. Pedro Pascal’s performance received particular acclaim, helping the film gain a strong cult following. Prospect stands out as a thoughtful, intimate sci-fi story that blends survival drama with alien-world exploration and emotional depth.
