RIP… Desmond Doss. You will never be forgotten.

Hugo Weaving doesn't get near enough credit for his work in this film. Andrew Garfield is terrific, but the dignity Weaving carries himself with when Doss' father shows up at the hearing makes it clear that he's a man forever changed by war, but he WILL make himself heard if it will help his son, even if it means putting on his old uniform.

This is where I think the standard for hero is.

Just imagine how many people were born because of him. The future kids of the men he saved. Then their kids and so on.

58:59 I got to see him at a presentation in 2004. He just stood up afterwards and waved, but I was in awe being in the presence of a real-life hero.

For another inspiring WWII true story - watch Audie Murphy playing himself in TO HELL AND BACK (1955).  About another incredible young man who pulled off incredible feats of selfless courage. Audie Murphy became the most decorated American combat soldier of WWII.  Here's to Desmond Doss, Audie Murphy, and all who have served, sacrificed, and inspired.

This is my personal favorite war movie ever. Love that its based off a true story, even if they left out some of the stuff that he did because it would seem too "unbelieveable". When they put him in for the Medal of Honor he said he didnt save more than 50, the army said it was over 100, so they averaged it out to 75. LOVE this movie

They left out some of the heroic things he did because they thought it wouldn’t be believable despite being true. They also possibly greatly underestimated the amount of men he saved on the field

I saw it was you 2 reactions, ive seen u before, i had to watch! My whole family has served,  and been injured. Bless the military men and women! This is the best war movie ever! Love from Northern Michigan.

It’s not that Kylie looks better in a sweatshirt, she just looks…better.;P

I was a US Navy Hospital Corpsman (Navy counterpart to Doss's medic). As such, I was very much aware of Doss's story.  As others have said Prior to Okinawa,  Doss had been twice awarded for valor for his actions on Guam and the Philippines.
Many years after the battle in this movie I was stationed on Okinawa with the Marines.  I have stood on Hacksaw Ridge.  The significance of that moment has stayed with me all these years later.  I served 10 years. I am not a combat veteran, but I am honored to have walked the same path as men such as Doss.

Glad you both got around to watching it 😊

The interviews at the end are from a documentary called The Conscientious Objector which has desmond alongside his siblings and his brothers in arms reunited once more to take you through his life before, during and after the war going back to bootcamp etc. Its what the movie is based around. Its absolutely mind-blowing and the best bio documentary I have ever watched and I highly recommend it so you learn the rest of the story.

I grew up with his grand nephew in Lynchburg, Virginia. They looked very similar

This is definitely my favorite war movie og all time!
I saw it as a kid with my dad in theaters, and it was so incredible!

The real story was so amazing they left the ending out.
While being carried away at the end he forced the medics to take another wounded man, and he crawled to safety, being shot twice more.

Thank you, guys, this is where I'm from lynchburg, Virginia.I've been suggesting that since the start.I couldn't wait to watch it with you. He lived in fort hill , and my mom worked at general hospital at least five miles apart , he went as the crow flies

This was a great movie treat, I believe i knew once Oliver had it in the poll over on Patreon you both were gonna like it. War should never be treated as an entertainment theater, but the romance this movie had it helped a little to be watched.

The explanation of why he wouldn't touch a gun added so much. "In my heart I did."

41:01 I think in the films context with the dialogue that, Thomas Doss was either in a delirious PTSD state still fighting Germans or a suicide attempt. His wife was trying to talk him down but it  sounded like abuse to Desmond so he went at him.
“Pull the damn trigger”
“DESMOND STOP!!”
His wife knew either way what was happening and didn’t want her son crossing the line.
