The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise is infamous for introducing an ever-expanding roster of secondary characters, many of whom have drawn the intense, sustained hatred of the fanbase. Characters like the unbearably loud Marine the Raccoon, the hyperactive Charmy Bee, and the grating tutorial robot Omochao—who has been terrorizing players with unhelpful advice for over two decades—are frequently cited as prime examples of cast bloat. The introduction of human companions has also sparked widespread backlash, most notably with Chris Thorndyke from the Sonic X anime, whose constant need for rescuing and emotional neediness hijacked the narrative. But no human character is more universally despised than Princess Elise III from the disastrous 2006 reboot, whose bizarre, interspecies romance with Sonic remains one of the most ridiculed moments in gaming history.

Even core gameplay mechanics have drawn the ire of the fans when tied to unpopular characters or forms. The Wisps from Sonic Colors are heavily criticized for halting the game's momentum to force puzzle-solving transformations, while the inclusion of the slow, plodding fishing stages for Big the Cat in Sonic Adventure baffled players looking for speed. The deepest resentment, however, is often reserved for characters introduced in poorly received games who refuse to leave. The edgy Jackal mercenary Infinite from Sonic Forces and the bafflingly persistent Deadly Six leader Zavok remain prime examples of villains thrust onto the audience, proving that the most hated elements in the Sonic franchise aren't always the enemies, but the design choices themselves.
