This is my favourite ballet and I remember when I first took my daughter to see it. She was about 6 years old and at the end of act I she cried so much that I had to take her to see the dancer behind the scenes to convince her that the ballerina is ok. Now, 12 years later that principle dancer is my daughter ballet teacher.

The laughter in the mad scene alsmost reminds me of that laugh people do when like, they almost get hit by a car, and they’re just like, like that shocked laughter when you almost die

Natalia is such a queen but this mad scene is everything. Btw, Giselle is my fav ballet for Osipova <3

Yesterday I went to see Giselle (a christmas gift) in Paris. I might have cried a few times.
Your videos have inspired me to take classes next year as a adult beginner. ❤

The other village girls also reacting with horror when they realise Albrecht has played them all, and that their lively and beautiful Giselle is about to be destroyed by it - that's something I really noticed.

Carlos Acosta is incredible. I saw a documentary where he was taking individual coaching from Anthony Dowell 25 years ago, which was great to watch! Dowell was guiding him to be gentler with his movements for a production of Sleeping Beauty.

Back in the 1980s when the A&E Network actually stood for Arts and Entertainment, they produced a wonderful documentary on Giselle. They even had clips of the legendary Olga Spessivtseva performing the mad scene. Spessivtseva famously had prepared for her role by visiting mental institutions and observing the patients' movements and facial gestures.

Can't believe the grief the mother must have gone through. Not only had her daughter died, but because Giselle stabbed herself she was not entitled to Christian burial, and the church taught suicides would be eternally damned.

As someone who writes for fun, seeing this made me want to write a story about Giselle's mom getting absolutely mad and destroying all the nobles in revenge for her daughter

@a_humble_narcissus 2 months ago

the way giselle's mom slowly stares at albrecht with giselle limp on his arms, for some reason that's the thing that broke me. you can feel the grief. man, AMAZING acting. ALSO shout out to the ensemble's acting and reacting to what the main characters are doing, it adds so much to the atmosphere

Giselle’s mad scene was how I was introduced to Osipova and the ballet as a whole. Unforgettable and heartbreaking! Her dancing the memories of their encounters felt like every broken hearted person thinking through the past and seeing it in a different light with new context. My favorite moment is when her mom shoves “Loys” away and rages at him for lying to Giselle because Giselle and her mother were the truly innocent victims here and she’s so rightfully grieving and angry at the result of Hilarion and Albrecht’s actions.

Seeing clips of Natalia Osipova's Giselle is what got me interested in ballet to begin with, I'm so happy to see you guys covering it!

@amoldovan88 3 months ago

I feel like this version of Hilarion is almost asking Albrecht to stab him, the way he kneels and just throws his arms open.

I've been waiting for this one!!🤍As a ballet dancer, Giselle's Mad Scene never fails to give me chills. Such an unforgettable performance!! I already know this is going to be an amazing commentary!🤍

I always wondered if Giselle stabs herself with Albrecht’s sword or if her heart gives out. Sadly, the stabbing makes more sense as the church at that time would have considered it suicide and that’s why her grave is in the middle of a forest rather than in the churchyard. Heartbreaking … and Natalia Osipova totally delivers here. 💔

The first time I saw Giselle was watching the San Francisco ballet and Yuan Yuan Tan was Giselle. She was just incredible. She was so broken in the mad scene that I was scared for her. It was just so real.

This and Lopatkina’s dying swan are two absolute emotional atomic bombs of ballet

@skicdevoli 3 months ago (edited)

I've always encounter this scene from Giselle as like five stages of grief, its how Giselle coping with the new. That is how real that scene really felt to me, how Giselle mirror those 5 feelings so effortlessly

@LaneMaxfield 3 months ago

I love what you say here about Giselle dying in a state of love, because to me, this is a story about innocence and love refusing to become bitter, even after disappointment. It's about Giselle refusing to lose who she is, even when everything in the world has let her down.

@Lunamoon-q6g 3 months ago

I do love how just before the curtains close the mother is praying to God to bring her daughter back, it is so sweet and heart breaking. I totally didn't cry a bit from watching this
