I can tell you from personal experience that the fish dive isn't the hard part. The woman is turning into your body, so you just sort of hold on and step into where her supporting leg was. The really hard part is bringing the woman back up gracefully with one arm, or two, onto her supporting leg again without it looking like you're lifting a sack of potatoes.

Watch ballet with children, even teens will get up and try the bluebird jumps when they see them and then start laughing and exclaiming "But how does he do that?! It looks so easy when he does it!" Told the child that ballet is where art and physics collide.

That first one looks TERRIFYING. I'm not a dancer, but the mere thought of risking dropping a ballerina on her face?! Nah, bro...I'm good. No thanks. CATCHING an ENTIRE HUMAN BEING with ONE ARM as she DIVES FOR THE FLOOR is not my idea of fun times. Much respect.

I was the first girl with Eglevsky.

Why did I know the second you said transformation scene our example would be Osipova. That Don Q lift is BONKERS.

As a former first shade, I can definitely agree it is one of the hardest pieces I have ever done. By the time I was finished, I was soooooooo done, but you can't ever let it show. But it's amazing how much the music carries you for the whole thirty-seven minutes, and how much the dancers support each other preparing for this tour de force. Not to mention the sweet relief when you get to the bottom of the ramps 🫠.

My favorite moment in Giselle (Idk if it's tricky or not but it's mesmerizing) is in the middle of Act 2 PDD where Giselle first does a partnered arabesque then, with Albrecht holding her waist, is "pulled" and lifted for a brief second. It looks like she was weightless during that step.

I recently saw a Bolshoi production of La Bayadere and I saw my friend I went to class with. She was the First Shade. I was so proud of her, especially since we were training side by side in the academy. I’m yet to reach out to her to see how’s she doing after that. But she was incredible.

Love watching you girls I am quite old, and don't know if you know that the basic step in the Entrance of the Shades has 3 varients that have evolved over time The version you have used here is the latest and easiest of them

Then in the brise-vole entrance of Bluebird coda used to have a repeat Also, the original step there is no coupe but both legs are to be straight the entire time, and you needed to do it on both diagonals One year I had to do Bluebird 97 times in one season with on tour with the Washington, DC original company There is also a very distinct epaulement in the upper body which is no longer done because of bending the leg

There is a lot of history that is lost today I'm happy to fill you in about things from history because you two are brilliant and I know you will take in the historical context and bring it to relevance with your amazing channel

That sounds interesting, I will tell Isabella. She always goes on about how clumsy humans are. But then again she is a cat.

Love this. Ballet is SO difficult but sooooo rewarding (both as a dancer and as a spectator)

Marienella Nunez as Kitri! Perfection!

@nicoled8547 8 months ago

Also really impressive is how the shades entrance down the ramp is repeated in the same leg over and over. I heard the dancers make sure they get added effort to keep up with their arabesque on the other side. I love this part so much- talk about power in numbers! <3

Natalia Osivopa jumping, no, diving,.... no, lifting off the ground like she had a trampoline underneath her feet and flying into Franz's arms at the end of Coppelia! I don't know how often I watched that part with my mouth standing open.

love these high difficulty, high reward segments!
those fish dives looked so effortless, whoa

Osipova and Vasiliev are extraordinary 🔥🔥🔥🔥

I did a semester in uni on "Giselle" and my thesis was that the mad scene only truly ends with this first entrance in Act 2.

@terpsiken 8 months ago

Also, in the demi plie detourne chugs in Act 2 of Giselle, the leg is supposed to be in arabesque, and it uses what is called a Wigman Spot, added to the ballet repertoire by German dance pioneer Marie Wigman after she went to study the Whirling Dervishes of Turkey, with the question "how do they not get dizzy?" when they do paddle turns en dedans with angled arms and head for hours in meditation The answer is that if you fix your eyes on a point that is rotating at the same rate as your head, and do not refocus your eyes on the surrounding blur of the world whizzing by, then you will not get dizzy Wigman Spotting is used in all Attitude, Arabesque and off-center turns in ballet, where the head is not atop the axis of rotation
