U.S. Grant is not a maverick, Ron Chernow's book does a good job of describing a man who is just about finding the enemy and destroying them. Grant simply believes in success and will just fight simple but effective battles.

I think that Field Marshal Sir John Harding was also among the best of British land commanders. Harding possessed a rare combination of personal frontline bravery (He led from the front) and deep operational intellect. As the primary architect of Operation Diadem, he carried out a multi-corps, multi-national offensive that achieved true operational deception and breakthroughs in the Italian campaign.

I’m afraid a lot of the FWW element of Horrocks is wrong. He was a POW. His Dad was a Doctor in RAMC. In 1920 he was part of the British Mission fighting the Bolsheviks where he nearly died. He was also adjutant of a Middx TA pre SWW which he said was one of the most important posts he held as it really helped him handling citizen soldiers. And post war he was Black Rod.

the best evidence of how good monty was and how is men thought of him is spike milligan.! in his hysterically funny memoirs we also get a glimpse of the chaos in the british army post dunkirk.spike a gunner at bexhill is told to hold off the germans .they had the awesome big gun .a huge ww1 captured german cannon with one shell that was a dud! guard duty consisted of one rifle between 8 men and no ammo! their colonel nicknamed leather suitcase due to the patches on his uniform was an elderly overweight alcholic who never left his office and gave impossible orders to the men which he never bothered to carry out .the officers spent all their time in the mess getting drunk.sgts terrorised the sqauddies with duties such as digging holes then filling them in again! nobody bothered to order new equipment or weapons .spike and co were reduced to fighting off home guard and other regiments to loot downed enemy bombers to obtain their machine guns to defend the town.food was awful as nobody supervised the kitchens .their tents leaked and were not replaced .lorries sat idle because nobody orderd parts ! we were supposed to beat the hun! he says they formed a drill of immediatly putting their hands up for when the germans arrived .spike says we were a beaten army no one cared about us .then he says a miracle happened .they woke one morning the colonel and his officers gone as were most of the ncos! monty had arrived ! lorries loads of weapons ammo uniforms decent food guns and shells and spare parts .he spoke to us saying hed taken over and we were going to win the war! we had a first rate colonel and top officers .we started fitness and battle training .we were keen at last and believed monty.he transformed a defeated bunch of losers into a loyal keen fighting force overnight ! and he never let us down .we loved him .he lead from the front and for us was a shining beacon of hope .he never let us down.spike said its impossible to describe the effect he had on the men .

The British found reasons not to appoint Morshead as corps commander at el Alamein despite his experience countering Rommel at Tobruk.
On his return home the Australian army soon gave him a corps in New Guinea and by 1945 the Australian government insisted he should be appointed as commander of the Commonwealth Corps  for the planned invasion of Japan ahead of a British General from the Italian campaign. Morshead was an outstanding candidate due to his experience of conducting amphibious operations in the SWPA in cooperation with the Americans and also he was familiar with dealing with MacArthur and his staff.

Now that Slim and Fourteenth Army have received more recognition, Eighth Army in 44/45 has become the forgotten army.

I fail to see how Montgomery allowing the Germans to evacuate 39,569 troops with their weapons, 9,065 vehicles, 27 tanks, 94 heavy guns, 1,100 tons of ammunition, and 970 tons of fuel from Sicily, not to mention 62,000 Italian soldiers from 11/8/1943 to 17/8/1943 can be viewed as a great credit to Montgomery's generalship.  If not for the Americans, those numbers would likely have been even worse.  Also, Patton was Montgomery's superior in the chain of command?  I don't think so, but it's fun to think how much better Husky might have played out if he were.
As for Overlord, the coordinated plan worked, and he should be given credit for that, but he also benefitted greatly from Operation Fortitude, one of the greatest intelligence victories of the war.  Also, lest we forget, HIS plan called for HIM taking Caen on D-Day, not 2 months later.  Again, it was HIS plan, and HIS failure to carry out HIS plan does not speak well of his generalship.
I suppose if the benchmark you are using for evaluation is how much press coverage Montgomery generated to improve British prestige, you have a point.  Lord knows the man loved a microphone, but it was Churchill that got Britain a seat at the post war table, not Montgomery, who by the way nearly scuttled all American support with his self aggrandizing 7/1/1945 press conference.

What?? You have Simonds on this list? Canadian Corps Commanders' Simonds and Foulkes got to these position more by chances and circumstances, and being staff officer course qualified before the war. Effective? Yes...More Simonds then Foulkes, but certainly not to be on a Best Britain's (Commonwealth?) WW2 General List.  Best Canadian general during WW2: Burt Hoffmeister, hands down...And if you have Brian Horrocks on this list, you should strongly consider having John Crocker too.
