I wish the charging stations would show their price, in the same way that petrol stations do.

"According to the Daily Mail" ...and that's all you need to know

I could not agree more,  I charge at Tesla for £0.21 per kw before 9am. I live in a flat so cant charge at home and the Tesla is 1 mile away. I just get there once a week at 8am have a mcdees breakfast then head to work for 9am. I'm loving it :)

So agree, I’ve learnt to ‘filter’ for Teslas or cheaper chargers and have found some lovely places to stop as well.

It’s the hotels that need sorting out charging. I’ve just been to Rotterdam and back this bank holiday. It’s super easy: just charge at hotel using Electroverse. Cost be dammed, most are more expensive than Tesla. But it’s simply much more convenient to not need thinking about charging in the day.

Destination charging is EV’s superpower.

You are a true inspiration to others and keep up your fantastic work as you uncover hidden money saving issues.

Might have to run the membership number for a holiday this summer….
Normally only ever need a 5-10kWh topup a handful of times a year at public chargers, but potential long distance coming up…

You don’t always need the Tesla App. I was at a V4 Tesla Charger not with our Tesla and a new owner of a non-Tesla asked for help charging. I anticipated they were going to have to download the App and register before they could begin.
No, they noticed the contactless display, tapped their watch and off started charging at the public rate.

Did 500 miles over the weekend (W. Yorks to S. Wales via Bath then home) and the detours to use Tesla chargers would have added 40 miles to my route and almost 2 hours of driving time. Sainsbury's Smart Chargers on Electroverse at 68p compares well to 63p for non-Teslas on the superchargers I could have used but the added miles and time meant I was happy to pay for the convenience.

I’m in the U.S., which has a different dynamic because fuel prices are lower, but I still find that charging my EV is cheaper than driving my wife’s very fuel efficient RAV4 Hybrid.

If I charge off peak, electricity is about 21 cents per kWh, which works out to roughly 5 cents per mile in my Tesla Model Y. Her Toyota RAV4 Hybrid gets around 38 MPG, so gas would need to be about $1.99 per gallon for her car to be cheaper to drive than mine.

If I charge during peak hours, electricity is around 41 cents per kWh. At that point, gas would need to be about $3.90 per gallon for the RAV4 to become cheaper. Historically, gas has often been below that, so on long trips where we have to charge during the day, the RAV4 is usually slightly cheaper to drive, but only marginally. Right now, with current gas prices, even peak charging is still cheaper in the Tesla.

The worst charging price I’ve personally seen was 67 cents per kWh in a major city. At that rate, gas would need to be around $6.36 per gallon for the Tesla to break even with the RAV4, so that’s definitely expensive.

What’s funny is that when I explained this to some family members, they went on a rant about how ridiculous it would be to structure your routine around getting to a charger before 9 a.m. to save money. But people already do this with gas. I know people who will drive across town just to save a few cents per gallon. If gas stations suddenly offered fuel at half price from midnight to 9 a.m., people would absolutely line up for it.

If you do pay for the membership cancel it immediately. You still get the month you have paid for and then you cant forget to cancel it in a month's time

I only use public chargers once or twice a year when we go on holiday.
I tend to choose which charger to use on the basis of convenience and whether I get some nice food there rather than price.
The best tactic is to avoid rapid chargers altogether and find accommodation with charging facilities.
Nothing better than driving to your holiday accommodation, plugging in when you get there and then the car is ready for your first day out the next day.
No more wasted time making special trips to go fill up at smelly petrol stations before driving there or driving home.

Having solar panels and batteries for some 12 years  (so they have now paid for themselves), We have not paid anything for charging our two cars, at home since mid March, and don’t expect to start paying anything until mid October. the car will easily make all the beaches, visitor attractions within a 125 mile radius of our house without the need of public charging so we are spoilt for choice.  Any longer trips always start off with the first 250 miles of ‘free’ miles, and looking for overnight stays with EV chargers, makes the whole thing painless and affordable without even having to think about the fuel cost.

There's also a hundred Arnold Clark locations which charge 55p with free coffee. And you can book a charger for a particular time.

I had a Mercedes Vito van which I replaced with an ID.Buzz.   On my trip from YARKSHIRE to southern Spain last year I achieved 35mpg in the Vito, on the trip this year I achieved 2.5 miles per kWh.  I know, both are low efficiency figures but the 2000km is almost entirely motorways.
Using SAINSBURY diesel price verses IONITY with subscription, I save 8p per mile in the Buzz in the UK.  But of course, in France the diesel is very expensive but the electricity is 33c per kWh at ionity, or €5 per complete fill at the overnight stop hotel.  In Spain the diesel is cheaper than the UK but so is the electricity, some chargers were free but the Ionity price was 36c per kWh.
Therefore in 3 different countries, EVs are cheaper than diesel vans.

I've been an EV owner for 6 months, a Toyota Bx4X and this video is going to change my long drives forever, can't thank you enough EVM for this amazing advice.
Already planned my charging point at a public Tesla Supercharger on my Surrey to Devon drive with the family this weekend.
Please don't ever stop sharing your thrifty tips, you Yorkshire dynamite!

another thing. With an ICE vehicle you’re always paying that price for your fuel with an EV you only do this on the 10 long journeys you do a year

The rest of the time you’re doing it on your dirt cheap overnight tariff (if available of course). In my case it’s currently 3.49p/kWh I’ve done 800 miles this month and it’s cost me £7

I drive an EV and have had a terrible change in circumstances by which my commute is 120 miles round trip a day. The Tesla supercharging network has been a life saver as I cannot charge at home. I pay the membership and get between 10-15p per kWh off what the non-members pay. Because I use the network so much, it’s well worth having the membership to me. Some Tesla destination chargers i’ve found are also free to use completely if you don’t mind sitting around for longer (my car charges at 50kw rapid or 22kw AC)

When on holiday (which is where i'm typically using public chargers) I find the slow (11kWh) chargers in the corner of public car parks at the towns we're visiting (Electroverse app is good for this) and just slow charge whilst we're out doing the tourist thing. Because they are slow chargers they are often 50p kWh ish and if you do that the whole time, you're easily covering your mileage, plus the spaces are often bigger so the car is safer!

If granny charging our e-Niro is not enough before a longer road trip the next day, our local Asda has a whole set of be.ev chargers for 39p/kwh after 7pm. Great for a top up while doing a bit of shopping. Plus the be.ev network is now much bigger after they acquired mer chargers.
