This time, we'll be walking around the Shin'ei-cho area of Omuta City, Fukuoka Prefecture.
Despite being located in front of a station where Nishitetsu express trains stop, the surrounding area retains many traces of its former vibrancy: shuttered shops, remnants of commercial facilities with graffiti, and arcades with missing roofs.
Omuta City developed alongside the Mitsui Miike Coal Mine, and in 1959, it was a city with a population exceeding 200,000. However, the decline and closure of the coal mines, population decrease, and the shift of people to suburban commercial facilities have all contributed to a significant transformation of the city center.
On the other hand, there are still locally-based businesses that continue to operate, and there are also movements toward redevelopment.
Why has the area in front of the station of this once-flourishing coal mining city become so quiet?
We will consider the current state of Shin'ei-cho while looking at the actual streetscape.
