A 17 year old boy, stealing a coat, served 2 years on a dingy boat, then made the enormous journey to Australia with very little food for a growing boy, stuffed together with many other men. So good on you John for trying to better you self.

An Australian has a pretty high chance of having convict ancestors. She must know the history of Australia.

I am curious why she didn’t try to find out how Humphries started out life, like what caused him to become violent and leaning towards a criminal life. And who were Miss Thorpe’s parents, and why did they let their young daughter marry a convict without coming to her aid or protection. Was her father violent and or a criminal also? Was that why she grew up both feisty and willing to take her scoundrel of a husband back? I think she must have thought she loved him.

I am related to her great grand father 4 times Humphry i wish they had gone back to where he came from in County Cork . my fathers family were from there and have the same surname just amazing it made my day.

10:10 Humphrey married Mary THORPE in 1844, but the birth record of William in 1845 names the mother as Mary HALL. This raises questions. Are they the same Mary? Was Mary Hall previously married to a Thorpe? Was it a very bad transcription error? What was the mother's surname on other birth records?

I never knew about The First Fleet, so I looked it up. The First Fleet was a convoy of 11 ships that sailed from Britain in 1787 to establish the first European penal colony in Australia. Commanded by Captain Arthur Phillip, it carried over 1,400 people, including convicts, marines, sailors, and their families. The fleet arrived in Australia in January 1788, landing first at Botany Bay and then moving to Port Jackson, where Sydney was founded.

Kind of disappointed that they did not delve into the Italian side of her ancestry as her people came from the Aeolian islands like Lipari, which are where my people are from

I remember Natalie saying she was bullied because of being 1/2 Italian, I also read she is the entire British Isles ancestry on her mother's side English, Scottish, Irish and even Welsh.

Theres a novel called the Secret River about a convict from London who is sent to the Hawksbury River. Its a good read. By Kate Grenville.

I adored Natalie. Wish I was able to get to know her in RL. - A part of my family from England from wayyyy back settled in Oz. Many, many years later I met one and still friends with him today. It's funny too. His and many in my family were military. Including my father and myself. His grandfather ended up being a Knighted military big-wig. Reginald Pollard.

I have similar Anciestry: Being Swiss and having a big part of my family here for many Centuries, I was interested to find out where my family came from: Genetic tests prooved that I am close to 90% Celtic from the British Isles (most likels Irish) and Southern Italian. People in my family people have a lot of temper, many were musicians, but also there were also some people who had alcohol problems. I bet Humphrey had the tendency to be a to be a heavy drinker.

My Family, both parents are from Australia. I know a bunch about my Mum's side but nothing about my Dad. Went digging just the past few years and found out my great grandad on my Dad's side was also not a great guy and was able to read the eventual divorce decree my great nan filed and her written testimony of what he had put her through. So many parallels to what she found about Humphrey. Made me sick to read what she had endured and tried to escape multiple times. Eventually she got away and he finally let her be but I hated finding out who he was and I wanted so badly to be able to go to that time and defend her.
