Don’t forget these bros play to no click

Elliot doesn't keep time, he is time. 💯

I’m SOOO glad you did this!! There is a vocalist, but his flight got cancelled last minute. Like true performers they still played! I highly recommend “Car Bomb - Elliot Hoffman - Drum Cam - Lights Out”. That song, “Lights Out” is a clinic on time signature changes and tempo changes that still hold a song together.

Michael Dafferner – vocals (2000–present)
Jon Modell – bass (2000–present)
Greg Kubacki – guitar (2002–present)
Elliot Hoffman – drums (2002–present)
You also will want to check Elliot Hoffman - [Car Bomb] - Meshuggah Tour 2014 - Multi-Track.

I’m a pianist.  Got introduced to them around the same time I discovered meshuggah and my god was I impressed.

Dude you've gotta check out their song spirit of poison. My legs hurt just listening to the second half of that song. Theres a video of one of their sets that has 4 songs back to back including spirit of poison. If I remember correctly youtube doesnt handle links in comments too well but the video's called "Elliot Hoffman - [Car Bomb] - Meshuggah Tour 2014 - Multi-Track"

Edit: The lineup is a vocalist, guitarist, bassist and drummer but in this video the singer couldnt make it to the show (i forget why, i think it was a passport issue) so they decided to just do an instrumental set

Guitarist and bassist. Played trombone through college.

0:42 I'm a metal drummer :)

This band does not use a click. I can't wrap my head around that. For an in-depth rundown of all kinds of progressive metal that is hard to count, check out Yogev Gabay and his "time consuming" series. Here's a rundown of the Carbomb song "Sentinel": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_w7qpRWQ0kQ&ab_channel=YogevGabay

Ex-professional bass player here, studied music at degree level, played a lot of jazz, funk, rock even classical now ive returned to my roots in metal, i enjoy watching drummers for some reason (rhythm section connection) had the honour of playing with some awesome drummers, my favourite jazz drummers would be Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Art Blakey and Philly Joe Jones but theres many more, cool channel dude, hope you're well,

Had the pleasure to see Car Bomb on Sunday opening for Dillinger, was seriously in awe of seeing this dude live. I still can't wrap my head around being this tight with this style of music and not playing to a click, Elliot is just that good
To my knowledge, a lot of their music is written in 4/4 then screwed with afterwards, adding and subtracting sections to make it sound so screwy

Metal guitarist for 40 yrs. Started drums in 3rd grade. Switched to guitars at 12.

To answer your question, I'm barely a drummer but if I can call myself anything it would certainly be a metal drummer. Life has landed me in a grindcore band, which is a genre I don't even listen to but it's fun to play and gave me the opportunity to finally learn to do blast beats. We have released some stuff independently but we all take the band as a hobby so don't expect to see us blow up and play festivals anytime soon.

cool reaction dude, elliot is such a cerebral drummer. im going to recommend your next reaction to be Kevin Paradis from Benighted if you want to see blast beat techniques pushed to the absolute limit with moeller/push pull!

Guitarist here! I feel like metal in general is riff based, the drummer has the fun job of interpreting and intensifying the riff. I think there’s a very “vibe” based writing process with a lot of jamming and “that’s it” moments from iterating vs a conceptual approach where you think of time signatures or anything like that.

Check out Ben Koller of converge. He’s one of the most talented and original drummers in the metal world.

Also fun fact, car bomb is named after an acacia strain song. Acacia strain isn’t as technical, but they were undoubtedly one of the most heavy breakdown bands of the 2000s metalcore scene.

1:14 starts

I've never played metal live, haven't owned a double pedal since HS. Most of my gigging and recording has been hip-hop and rock, and jazz has been a longterm study. But I'm exited hearing any new musical ideas, regardless of the genre.

Elliot Hoffman covers artists like Aphex Twin on his channel, among other various genres. Jazz is definitely part of the package.

He is extremely relaxed for how nasty and technical the music is

Before Car bomb there was a band called Neck with him and the singer and he has some solo stuff out under the name oolxloo

That’s really great what you‘re doin‘ Matt. This is what I‘d call it‘s the real „crossover“ 👍👍👍….

bassist/guitarist here! saw them in chicago in 2017 and my buddy and i talked to the entire band after their set like they didn't just play the craziest thing ever hahahhha.

fun story about that, too: the drummer and bassist were in a band lovingly titled "Spooge" and i happened to have found a copy of their practically non-existent "Nice & Warm" EP (...yeah) for sale on Discogs from the Netherlands of all places and nabbed it immediately.

so i'm telling them this and the bassist goes, "How much did you pay for it?" and when i told him i got it for $5 he goes "you paid too much." 😂

nicest dudes ever, they let us nerd out on them and we confirmed that yes, they DID indeed sneak the "Maybach Music..." DJ tag into the opening of their song Crud from the w^w^^w^w album hahahahhahahaha (this is the sample that the rapper Rick Ross put at the beginning of all his songs if you aren't aware)
