England Lost to Spain. But Their Bigger Problem Is Coming | Tim Vickery & Henry Winter

FC Camisa

England have just gone down 3-2 to world champions Spain at Wembley, but Tim Vickery and Henry Winter believe Thomas Tuchel has problems that go far beyond one result.

Why does England still struggle to control the biggest games? Should Trent Alexander-Arnold be starting? And perhaps most importantly, who replaces Harry Kane when England's captain can no longer lead the line?

Tim and Henry also turn to Brazil, where clubs have approved a major reduction in the number of foreign players allowed in matchday squads. Will it create more opportunities for young Brazilian talent, or is the country's player-development problem much deeper?

From Jude Bellingham and Anthony Gordon to Brazil's disappearing street-football culture, this episode of Futebol & Football looks at how England and Brazil are trying to produce the next generation.

Henry should have acknowledged the other English players remembered that night such as Mike Bailey, Jimmy Rimmer and Bobby Tambling. They deserved a tribute.

Thanks Henry Winter for his tribute comments about the late great Kevin Keegan. Marvelous player and manager, who alongside Bobby Charlton was one of the humblest men to grace the English game.

Everyone wanted England to "have a go", something they didnt do against Argentina. When they did, they got exposed. Now we all dont like it.

If this wasn't a glorified friendly, I would be willing to bet Spain would not have let England gain any control of the game. I rewatched a little bit of the Spain games vs Argentina and France in the WC after this game at Wembly and it was clear that Spain were not putting as much effort against England in the press and to gain the ball back and their speed of pass and play was not as fast either. It's not surprising, no team will be the same in a friendly as they are in a big tournament. This also means that England was not at their WC level as well, but the difference is Spain's car goes up to 150 mph and England's reaches 120 mph so at their top levels, Spain will dominate. Spain did start to put their foot on the gas in the second half and it was obvious England had no answer.

Jude defended Cucurella when they were playing against Athletico recently. When you're his teammate he will fight for you, when you're his enemy he is against you but as he has said it all stays on the pitch. Too much has been made about his attitude making it seem negative but we see now England need to be more like him. A daily fail reporter claimed Jude going up to Kane when he missed his penalty was a sign of him maturing but he did the same thing in the 2022 World Cup when Kane missed the penalty against France. He has always been this way the press/media are just presenting the same actions differently.

When people talk about England needing someone who can play that deeper midfield role — a Rodri-type player — there is another Bellingham worth thinking about: Jobe.

Jude Bellingham could obviously be coached to play deeper, but personally I think you’d be wasting some of his greatest qualities. Jude is far more dangerous further forward, playing as a No. 10 or with the freedom to attack.

But Jobe is different.

He’s playing at Dortmund and is already in the England U21 setup. He has the physical attributes, technical ability and midfield experience to be developed into a much more defensive-minded midfielder.

Can you coach him to improve his positional discipline, defensive awareness, scanning and ability to control the tempo from deep? Of course you can. That’s what coaching and player development are about.

England don’t necessarily need to wait for the next Rodri to magically appear. Sometimes you identify a talented young midfielder with the right attributes and develop him specifically for the role.

For me, Jude stays further forward.

But Jobe? I’d seriously look at developing him as that deeper midfielder England are looking for.

I don’t understand this obsession with replacing Harry Kane. Firstly, he’s probably got 3-4 years left at TOP level. Also, remind me who Spain’s no.9 was at the World Cup, or Euros. Remind me who Argentina’s number 9 was at the last WC. Remind me who PSG’s no.9 has been in the last few years.

Adapt the way you play. Don’t obsess over one position. Work around it. We have the players.

Additionally, we won the u21 Euros with Anthony Gordon as main striker!

Love Henry's defence of Trent. The lad is basically Beckham of this generation. Criminally underused at international level.

It's simple: Learn to play past the high press - hence the importance of Trafford replacing Pickford. Possession-based football, with patient build ups, and devastating counter-attacks. And get rid of Tuchel and bring in Howe, or Carrick immediately. Sadly, the skill of our individual players will continue to plaster over the cracks, saving Tuchel from an early exit. A few disastrous results might force the FA's hand, who will hate to face up to their appalling mismanagement, but will be forced to act when fans and sponsors start walking away. Mainoo alongside Rice, though swapping Rice to the right side, with Spence the only square peg in a round hole, though he's already proved he's more effective than our more naturally left-sided or footed players. Stones and Burns as the back ups to Konsa and Guehi - anyone who thinks Maguire is quick enough to play a high press system is deluded. Alexander-Arnold at right back, intermittently getting forward alongside Saka, but mainly playing in the right, inside channel, as quarterback. With Bellingham in the centre, Gordon and Saka on the flanks, and Kane up front, playing a 4-3-3 out of possession, transitioning to a 4-2-4 in attack, England would be a team capable of winning tournaments. We will never win tournaments by booting the ball long, or relying on our counter-attack - not while repeatedly conceding possession to teams like France or Spain.

Bellingham or Gordon for the captaincy...Kane for the bench...bring him on, if necessary, for the last 10´

I think we have to come to terms with the fact that most supporters in England couldn't care less about the result. Club foorball totally dominates the game here and it's not uncommon to hear people just wanting their club's players to not get injured, rather than discuss the actual game. It wasn't like this in the 70's and 80's, every England game was a massive event because they were mostly the only live games you would see on TV apart from the cup final. The further into the dim and distant past 1966 goes, so the interest around England seems to wane, at least among top team supporters. Look at the banners draped around the hoardings at International games and see which clubs are being repped, it's mostly league one and league two clubs because following England is the only actual excitement they get.

England can't control a game. They play for moments of chaos whilst top teams can control tempo to suit their needs. Spain cut through England like a knife through butter. They need to switch to 433 with the central midfielder controlling.....the question is, who is that player?

@kailashpatel1706 2 days ago

Tim's comments at 15.15 about Bellingham playing in a deeper role mirrors the historic debate about Bryan Robson in the 1980s possibly playing in that role from where he could also breakout to supply passes to the key men like Waddle and John Barnes, Barnes complained he never got someone to produce those balls for him at England, like Hansen did at Liverpool
