It took me an embarrassingly long time to realise Katniss agreed to the capital hunger games to make Coin think she was on her side, and that Haymitch understood what Katniss was doing.
its so funny to think about how fast coin jumped at the opportunity to say that Katniss was dead. it really reflected how coin underestimated katniss and the people that she had with katniss even after everything that katniss had done for the rebel cause.
You missed one thing from the books, it was Gale and Beetee who designed the bombs, they weren't Coins. That's why Katniss questioned Gale, 'Were they yours?'
12:21 Gale designed the bombs. It wasnt a second round of bombs, it was a bomb that went off twice, to kill medics. Katniss had previously said no to using the bombs.
Coin thought that Katniss would fawn like Peeta, instead of what she always did: fight. She underestimated her because she's a teenager, but like Pallor said Coin has been underground way too long... Coin knew loss, but she didn't know loss like district 12 did, nor like Katniss did. Katniss literally had to claw herself AND her family out of the hole of hunger and death. Coin didn't do such a thing, she was way safer in the colony-like district 13, especially since the Capitol didn't dare bother them.
Also, the districts weren't okay with Coin, they didn't like her, they liked Katniss and looked up to Katniss. They were rebelling because of her and they knew it, it was only 13 that wanted to follow Coin. The problem was that Coin was the strategic leader of the rebellion since it supposedly started in 13 (which it didn't , it started in 11) and since most of the ultimate orders came from her because of that people had to follow her; but they HAD to yet they didn't want to. Even Bogs was distrustful of her.
I also wanna point out Coin had no reason to keep soldiers watching Snow. He wasn’t stupid, he wasn’t gonna escape and risk being put in some ugly ass cell or something. There was nowhere to run too, all his allies had been defeated. The guards were never there to keep Snow in. They were there to keep Katniss out. Coin knew there was a chance Katniss would visit Snow, and so she kept him unreachable. And it was truly a genius plan, she was just unlucky that at the exact moment Katniss ended up in front of the greenhouse, the guards watching the entrance weren't 13's. They were Paylor's. At first they refused her on Coin's orders, but then Paylor arrived and overruled her. And since those were her guards, loyal to her first and foremost, they obeyed. In that moment, it was over for Coin. I've always thought Paylor did it on purpose. She was a smart woman, she always disliked Coin for staying safe at 13 while the Districts fought. She sure as hell disliked the fact that a man who had brought so much pain to Panem, killed so many kids in the Games and then civilians/soldiers during the Revolution, was calmly waiting for a clean execution in his mansion. She also must've known there was something shady about Snow not using the hovercraft to escape and instead bombing his own children, making the only ppl who still were loyal turn on him. And she wanted to give Katniss the chance to find out. To get closure, at least.
The bomb thing where the citizens believed they were getting food / supplies actually happened. There was a food station set up in 🍉 that was bombed soon after
I just finished a book about countries that descend into civil war and basically Katniss understood that coin was just exploiting the rebels for power and that the autocracy would continue. The only way to prevent it would be to remove both autocracies and create a power vacuum that, ideally, there were no other charismatic leaders who could exploit it. As the people’s lives improved their desire to band underneath a charismatic leader and the myth that “the ends justify the means” would both evaporate leading to actual peace.
Basically katniss retained her compassion for the “other side” and this allowed her to realize that full militance was not revolution but just more of the same. A lesson for the ages.
I reread the Hunger Games recently and this really tracks with what I noticed now that have better literary analysis skills. Suzanne Collins really pulled out all the stops with the exploration of dictatorship/authorotarianism. Now just to finish reading Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes lol.
The plan was set ahead of Prim's death: Gale planned the two-wave bombing plan to deal with the Nut. Coin then decided to use that at Snow's Mansion, and make it look like Snow did it.
I definitely think ceaser flickerman, especially in the end was aware of what snow was doing, the lies peeta told, and how horrible it was.. but it was probably one of his only sources of income and recognition. and he would probably be “terminated” id say he was told to make everyone believe it was just a game, i think he played a bigger part than most people think
