When your granddaughter says that "everyone in school" styles their hair after your biggest existential threat you know things are about to go sideways.

Apparently, even President Snow falls prey to the "back in my day" eventually

Panem is still probably the best-run dystopia in teen fiction. Less than 5 million people control the entirety of North America, and most of those people are functionally serfs. You've organised all your workers into districts separated from each other by hundreds of miles of inhospitable wilderness, and made them all focus on producing a single set of resources, forcing them all to be inter-reliant on each other - but their only connection to each other is the railways you've monopolised, which means they're all even more dependent upon you than they are upon each other. You would have near total control even without brutality. You're even running it as a democracy, meaning the elites always have a non-violent means of implementing change. You've prevented the formation of a parallel elite, and formation of a parallel elite is the big driver of revolutions.

Consequently, the state's downfall only came as a result of war with an external nation with equivalent military tech running a massive psyop. That's really good by teen fiction standards, where it's usually one random teenager destroying the government.

I love how you have Snow assume Katniss is some Machiavellian psychopath, because he can't imagine that anyone else is less self-interested than him.

The human/wolf hybrids were even more terrifying in the book. I remember the moment of Katniss identifying Rue absolutely breaking me in middle school.

Snow even admits that where he went wrong was being too focussed on Katniss

And underestimating Coins actions and ambitions

He understood that the Mockingjay was a political and PR pawn

And thought he needed to deal with her.

Katniss getting such a high score in the pre-game phase must've been absolutely hilarious from the perspective of the others tributes, imagine being a lower level non-career tribute and shitting yourself in fear of someone who must obviously be a threat because you have no idea that the game makers were just being petty with that ranking.

I love Donald Sutherland's President Snow. He feels ripped straight from the books. I can't wait to see Ralph Fiennes play him.

When Captiol destroyed Districts 12 it was the worst moment in Katniss's life but for Snow it was another Tuesday
All of this because Snow couldn't haven't get over a breakup 😂

Oh, this perspective just gave me a new thought. I know the scene between Snow and Seneca Crane was for the benefit of the viewers and wasn't in the books but I just realized that in the context of "Songbirds and Snakes" it could be Snow trying to be the sort of mentor to Crane that Dr. Gaul had been to Snow himself. But when the "mentoring" failed, Snow did to Crane what he always did those who are problematic to him.

"Imagine that you are snow" and then I shot myself.

Imagine knowing there was a District that was known only for making nuclear weapons and not making sure there wasn’t a massive underground bunker complex there 🤣

i was suprised by the lack of peetas baby bomb announcement

Congratulations to Snow for becoming the first Septillionaire in history, God made the world in seven days so our divinely chosen president should make seven times the normal amount. LET'S GO!

Quibble: the prequel, Sunset on the Reaping, shows Plutarch to have been around President Snow since his early 20s. Plutarch was also a game maker during Katniss’s first games, and might have had a hand in the “two winners” planning and her score of 11. Plutarch’s family was long known to Snow and he probably assumed Plutarch couldn’t have been a rebel (just ambitious). By the 74th Hunger Games it seems Plutarch is part of the generation that doesn’t need to punish the Districts. In fact in the movie, Seneca Crane has an interview that’s not in the novel where it spells out that he’s lost the reason is to punish the rebels.

Sunrise On The Reaping is even better from Snow’s point of view. I know you don’t do books, but please do the movie when it comes out

I don't think that Crane "did it anyway" with the 'Two Victor' rule change as stated at 9:40.  What Crane did is saddle the Underdog who was possibly going to win with a critically injured nobody who would prevent her from winning.  That way everyone would root for their doomed love and Cato would win because obviously Cato was supposed to win.

Snow didnt even see Katniss as a rival just an accident turned revolution. if he genuinely thought she wanted to defy the capitol there is no way in hell gale or her mom are surviving

1:30 the gritted teeth when he says "District 12"🤣
