Katniss and Peeta having their first child at 32 is the most normal thing they've done 😅

A teenage girl living in horrible conditions said she didn't want kids. As a grown woman, with a loving husband, living with stability and (relative compared to before at the very least) prosperity she changed her mind. Not exactly strange

I think not wanting children when you are 16 and already take care of kids in a world were people are starving and reaped for the games is a reasonable outlook on life. Being 30 and finally having kids with your partner after healing and being safe, is a different story. I never saw it any differently.

the idea that katniss isn’t maternal is hilarious to me. even being traumatised as a kid, she still did everything in her power to make sure prim was fed and looked after, especially when her mom couldn’t. then in the games, she took rue under her wing??!?

Totally agree. I've always seen the ending as visual way of showing how safe and secure the world is at that point. Safe enough for even Katniss to be ok with having kids

Nevermind the fact that it's a miracle they were even able to have kids. After being poisoned, and beaten and exploded and burned and thoroughly traumatized. The fact that neither of them were infertile through all of that is another big middle finger to the capitol.

Peeta being the tradwife is not an image I knew I needed but now that I have it I feel so incredibly blessed

I always remember her explanation for not wanting kids as “because I will love them and then they will get reaped and I’ll have to watch them die” (paraphrasing from the books). She knew she would love her children but what stopped her was the games. Once she felt secure in the fact that there would never be another Hunger Games she could allow herself to have the family she knew she would love

I reread the books as a pregnant adult a couple months ago, and I love the fact that they have children at the end. It shows how resilient they are and how much Katniss actually loved Peeta. I completely missed the detail that her children are chubby, it’s so beautiful to think that they no longer worry about food.

It didn't surprise me that it took Katniss 15 years to decide, deep down, that the world was safe enough to have kids.   The first few years would've been full of the fear that the new government would fail.

Suzanne Collins even wrote in a medicine factory 12 as part of its reconstruction. I think she made it very clear that the story's ending is about healing, not just for Katniss and Peeta, but also for Annie, the mom, Gale, and Panem in general. Those kids represent the one thing Katniss could only get bc all the events in the story happened. It's the least likely future at the start of the book and yet Suzanne Collins chose to end such a heartbreaking story on a hopeful note and managed it beautifully.

I think there's something to be said about reclaimed & repressed femininity here. Katniss often repels traditionally feminine & motherly things: the singing, the healing, the caretaking of Prim & Rue, being "desirable" and/ or "charming", etc. But this is explicitly not because she doesn't want to, but because she doesn't want to under the rule of the Capitol, where those things would be actively abused and exploited. Katniss is getting the life she never ALLOWED herself to want.

I’ve always taken the line of Peeta wanting  kids so badly not as Peeta begging or manipulating Katniss to have kids. I had a friend that desperately wanted to be a mother. When she would be around kids, she’d get this instant glow about her. Her whole self softened. She never outright said how much she wanted to be a mother, you could just see it when she was around kids. That’s what I took that line about Peeta to mean. Katniss even says it - if someone was going to be a parent, it’s Peeta. They were in a committed and loving relationship. She watched him. She would know how badly he wanted them without him saying a word.

Even if Katniss wasn’t hardened by actual PTSD, not wanting to have kids when you’re 16 feels relatively normal. I didn’t want kids at 16, and compared to Katniss, I’m privileged. I’ll be 21 in about 6 weeks, and while I would like to have kids one day, I’m not in any rush to do that now. I don’t consider myself responsible enough to have a credit card, let alone raise a child.

I also think that Katniss having kids is one of the most important and necessary parts of the ending. It truly shows that the games no longer control her and Peeta’s life. It feels like they finally got that freedom to live their lives the way they wanted without the government or their trauma controlling them.
