From one to another - stay strong, the end of this annoying era is near.

The worst thing about Burnout is the way it creeps up on you, it isn't evident at first - it slowly saps bits of your soul.

Creating and being able to finish a project is so important to not get burned out. I've been in tech for over 20 years and it has changed so much and not in a good way. Applications nowadays are alway online, have to connect to hundreds of different other pieces of software with hundreds of different API's which constantly change (preferably without informing anyone about the changes) and users that always want more. If that doesnt ruin your day a Windows update will break stuff for you.  You used to be able to program something and when it was done it was done. You can build something and sell it to a customer as a finished product but nowadays you're NEVER done and its a constant treadmill which will burn you out over time. Next year i'll also be going to looking for a new job and i'm seriously contemplating a non-IT job. In my personal life linux has been the lifesaver for me as it brought back some joy in computing.

I'm personally not experiencing a burn out, but I still found this video telling your experience really useful, thank you for it

I burned out in high school and programming was the only thing I was able to do, because of that I decided to make programming as a job and now I feel like I might burn out of programming

Videos like this are a welcome break. I diverted from tech and went retail. Always wondered if I would of burned out if I went the other route. Nice knowing I didn't miss much headache

Oh my god it was so relatable I didn't expect it to be that much. I lived basically the same thing.
Didn't understand that I stopped caring about what I do, well actually it's much more complex because you do care about how you're doing it, it stresses you out because you can't reach your goals, and in fact your soul is dying inside.
I continued until my body literally stopped working, one morning my hands wouldn't get on the keyboard. Boom, done, brain was finally entirely consumed.
Fast forward the most terrible phase of my life there (because I was also very depressed) and here I am not working and thinking I'll never be able to do this again, ever.
And the same terrifying feeling of "but I'm supposed to love this stuff" and feeling soooo dead inside. I often said, "empty shell". More generally I had the impression I forgot everything that makes me a passionate person on many subjects. Just thinking about coding again made me sick it was physical.

Slept a lot. Did other small things, but very slowly. Then slightly bigger things, but never ever a computer thing.

Months and months passed and one day, the urge to code. The machine called me. I started modding for a game I was playing (being able to play games again was also a sign that things improved). Same feeling you had, being able to really dig subjects (modding can be so hard), make it the best I could do, spend unreasonable hours to make code nobody else was gonna read perfect, package it nicely, not having people in your back. Didn't force it too. But the more time passed the more I felt unstoppable.
And that's how, months later again I felt I could take on a job again.

So anybody that reads this and is undergoing some degree of burnout: I know it's not simple. I know you might feel like shit. That you don't recognize yourself. Yes that's not you, the industry did that to you, forced to be someone you aren't and brain doesn't like that. But your brain is protecting itself now, it's still there don't worry. Let yourself do nothing, let yourself feel what you need to feel, talk when you can. And wait. That can be long yes. But you'll hatch again like a flower.

It's good to know that someone managed to escape this f*cking Groundhog Day nightmare and enjoy life for 1.5 year.

I felt burnout yesterday. You are here now. :) Thank you.

My story is different. I was burnt out for years of trying to have a regular job in e-commerce companies just because 20-25 years ago too many people (family and school mainly) made me believe that programming wasn't for me as I didn't have good math votes at school. Some years ago I simply understood that it wasn't true, and I proved that I could recover from all those years quickly, quickly learn programming and all the IT/Dev related contour skills, and I decided that never again I would allow anybody to prevent me to follow my goals. I always liked to mess with hardware and software, and I really find programming so satisfying. I still find many obstacles today in this road, but they are only from other people and companies, never from my lack of skills. I keep learning, I like learning, I'll never stop learning until I die, and I will follow this road until the end whatever the cost.
Also thanks to channels like yours I find so many useful informations and skills I look forward to learn. I'm actually astonished that you don't have many more subscriptions with the great job you're doing. Keep up and thank you for sharing your experience!

Ive been an analyst   programmer for 42 years, 25 of that as a contractor.

Ive worked for 14 different companies/organisations.

Im still doing it now, in my last year before retirement.

If i could go back id make the same choices career wise, its been excellent!

I did the exact same thing around 2020/2021 😂😂 burnt out, left my job and just coasted for a year. It was the best feeling ever. Towards month 8-9, I began wanting to work on computer stuff again (I was in IT, not necessarily programming). I did finally get back on the horse work-wise, which sucked because these potential jobs were looking down on me for being without a job (willingly) for a year. I also had quite a bit less experience when I left that previous job than you did, probably closer to 4-5 yrs in the field. I took some not-so-great jobs here and there but wasn't afraid to back out and say no this time now that I knew what could happened if I stayed (more burn out), and now I'm at a pretty decent job that gives me the freedom to work on general improvements when I have time outside of my day to day work. Much less stressful and a lot less work that "doesn't matter". I've been here for a little over a year now and while it's not perfect, it's still quite a bit better than before. Glad to hear I wasn't the only one who tried temporary retirement lol
